Topic: Two Pies and a Beardfish Posted: November 10 2007 at 11:11 |
I voted for Magic Pie. Love that band, and Circus Of Life just keeps getting better and better.
Beardfish did nothing for me.

...and the Beardfish fans have overtaken the topic, yet the voters are still hungry for some of that Magic Pie, I'm surprised it's this close, I thought that Magic Pie had a lot of fans around here...

great story, these guys aren't huge like Porcupine Tree or Tool but of the people that have heard 'em, the 'Fish are underground favorites

somebody told me it was simply called Sleeping in Traffic Suite or
something like that, anyway I'm glad to see a band these days going
back to the studio so frequently and getting albums out - enough of
this waiting 3-5 years stuff! I believe that Beardfish are
already working on their next one and it should be out in mid '08
sometime...lucky you to have seen them live! |
it was quite the experience actually.... it was their first show in the
US... I sure as hell didn't recognize them.. they hadn't been
added here yet...
I remember distinctly my first impression of the band.. before they took the stage..
I was sitting there.. having a dog and a beer... looking over the horde of RPI albums I had just bought from Greg.
I noticed a bunch of kids walk by me.. I was struck in particular
by one of them... the kids had the most beautiful head of long blond
hair... I ran my hand through my thinning head of hair and told
myself that old age is bitch.. but hahaha.. us old folks can
afford to drop three or four hundred dollars at a time for albums when
we want to
I went back to ogling my new albums and was pretty much ignoring the
group on stage... some group that was slightly jazzy and jam
orientated that must have called themselves prog to the booking
agent to get on the bill that day. I sure didn't hear it though.
I stretched back to look over the crowd when I noticed that group of
youngsters had seated themselves fairly close to me... to my horror
they broke out cigarettes and started firing them up...
kids.. I said to myself as I fished out a sympathy Winston.
Those things do stunt your growth. I smoked my cigarette and
watched them intently.. .they sure looked like they were having a good
time.. I thought again to myself ... it is nice that kids here in N.C.
are in to prog rather than the sh*t that passes for music these
days. I turned my head over to Greg Walker's tent to see if
what was going on there... when I turned back around.. the kids
were gone.. I looked for them.. they had been right there... I
saw them.. standing right next to stage..
I surpressed a moment of horror... oh god.. these kids are on dope and
are going to rush the stage. I set my CD's aside.. and made ready
to jump into any melee that might ensure. I drained my beer and
was ready to jump into action when the band from New Orleans finished
and the emcee of the show announced the next group... some group from
Sweden ... Beardfish... I had heard really good things about them from
some of the guys here at PA's before the show and I was interested to
hear them. I looked around... and to my horror..these kids got up
on stage and strapped on their instruments. And the blond haired
kid whom I had admired.. .strapped himself on a sweet.. beautiful
Fender Jazz bass.
DId I ever feel old... their set was heavy on the 2nd albums
material. They closed their set with ... what has to be Sleeping
in Traffic. It really was an experience.... not just for
myself...but they were the talk .. not just of the day.. but of the
whole event. They made a lot of fans that day.

I know I would... which surprises me that I haven't got it yet. I
saw them a year ago this fall at ProgDay in Chapel Hill. They had
an extended piece... maybe 20-25 minutes.. that simply floored the
audience... hell even the line at beer tent emptied out and Greg
Walker's tent was empty for the only time the whole weekend. I
spoke to the band after the show and they said it was a piece they had
composed earlly on..before their first album yet had never been able to
'perfect' it to put in on an album. They said it probably would be on
the next one. I don't remember the title of it.. .since that day was
hotter than hell and I was a bit ... lubbed up on overpriced
beer.

I like all three of these bands but Beardfish's "Sleeping In Traffic:Part 1" was very impressive,so I pick the 'Fish with Magic Pie a close second.

same here... saw Beardfish live last year.. and they were very ..very impressive. Still haven't got the 'new' one though Preferred the first album to the second album for what it's worth..

If you like Gentle Giant or Zappa and the Mothers, then you'll love Sleeping in Traffic Part One. Like I said, I enjoyed it much more than the first two, if that's any indication. So...um, yeah. Go get it!
From what I can gather, Part II is gonna be great. They're currently playing an epic called Sleeping in Traffic in the live set to euphoric opinions, which is supposed to take up a large chunk of the next album. Looking forward to it...

the exact reason why I can't listen to them, though for me it's not just the lyrics. I would probably have a higher opinion if they didn't try to sing in English due to the accents, and it would mask those lyrics.
I thought Apple Pie was pleasant but a little too much in the Spock's Beard/Neil Morse direction for my tastes. I love Beardfish, on the strength of their last album. The first two were good but featured a lot of weaker material amongst the ringers...so Sleeping in Traffic wins it for Beardfish, my favorite album this year.

I'm hesitating between Magic Pie and Beardfish here.
The thing is I have a slight problem with the kitchier side of Magic Pie and some of their lyrics.... But the music is great.
As for Beardfish, Sleeping In Traffic I is a good release, but their previous A Sane Day isn't an album I like too much...
As for Apple Pie, I might need more listens, and though it's not bad, I'm still not as enthusiastic as others about them.
So, Magic Pie it is.

Good Idea. Lots of good new bands out there that need attention. My vote goes to Magic Pie.

Which do you prefer? I voted Magic Pie.
