Enough!
I thought this thread could be left open so people could still offer something constructive about the split,or to talk about bands we might have placed in the wrong sub,but I was wrong.

Are people making up this nonsense? It really is just heavy metal done in different styles and allow sites such as this to draw people in and allow any noise to be prog.
In my opinion prog died in the late 70's and after several failed attempts at resuscitation, never recovered and passed away noisily, still clinging to the belief that the Americas could save it. However they killed it stone dead, with prissy noises and duff heavy metal bands.

There is also the option "the way it is now", which I'm perfectly happy with. It's the best solution I can think of within the given limitation of having only one genre per artist. |

Still, only few people come over to my website where multi genre has been possible for almost two years now. Most of the words you're using to describe the albums are available as tags ... "quirky", "humour" etc.. |

Mmm.... what part of "NOW it can be closed" isn't so clear? I guess for further discussion in the sub-genre-ization thing you have to create another thread. This one has lost credibility and no one will visit except for weirdos like me who want to have the last word....... If you want everybody to participate in a thread about genres, create one.
NOW (as in this moment) it (referring to the thread) can (as in "you're able to do it") be (as in "action", a verb coming to life) closed (verb and results we expect).

Well, it is insane in my opinion. It would be much better if a band could belong to more than just one genre. All this sub categorizing is only necessary because this is not the case. We will soon have a jazz-rock/fusion sub-genre in Prog Metal and a Metal sub-genre in jazz-rock/fusion. This does definitely NOT make it easier for the viewer of this site.
Currently a lot of bands are in here under a wrong moniker because of this problem. Kraan and Embryo, for example, are listed under jazz-rock/fusion. The first albums of Kraan are, however, typically Kraut too with their quirky humour. And anyone who knows just a little bit of Embryo definitely feels confused to see them listed under jazz-rock/fusion. Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze are listed under "Progressive electronic", although their origins are definitely in Kraut and their first albums definitely belong there. I could continue this endlessly. |

^ Other teams are considering sub-categorising their subgenres by movements, factions, styles and regionality within the subgenre. This will not involve creating new subs as PM and Art Rock did, but in essence it is the same thing as it collects similar bands and artists together.

It is inane within this site. There are in my opinion two possibilities: Either Prog Metal stays included on this site, then it should be treated like every other category and not get an "Extrawurst" with lots of sub categories. The other possibility: You create a Prog Metal site of its own where there can be all the subcategories you want. We don't have lots of subcategories for symphonic either, and there are lots of very different bands under that umbrella too with very many different styles. And I don't see the necessity for subcategorizing symphonic. Mike will probably say "Ah, but Prog Metal is different", but then there is option one for him.

These sub categories of metal seems inane to me because there is only one category metal fits inside. To put it simply music is just music. This discussion is laughable.

I don't see how any two genres can be mutually exclusive. Genre fusing happens everywhere, I don't see why it can't happen with rock and avant-garde. Heck, I have albums of avant-garde RAP!

Whats done is don, Jean stop. More sub genres=More bands albums being on the definitive top twenty= More bands being recognized and appreciated. NOTHING BAD CAN COME FROM THIS!
Now, can we please close this thread.
