Portnoy has a terrible voice, besides his bad background vocals on DT albums I don't like his singing on the second Transatlantic album either. It's the only flaw on that otherwise flawless album.

I like DT, but Portnoy vocals are awful.

I think he's good as a backing vocalist, BUT, on SC, it doesn't always fit with LaBrie's voice.

Not great by any stretch of the imagination. I'm not even that mad on Labrie either as much as I love DT.

I don't  really like his voice, but in small doses it's tolerable.

I think as backing he's fine

but when he's trying to take center stage and be "metal" it kind of kills it

when I saw them live semi-recently he sang the first section of Take the Time and sounded fine Smile

He does a good job, it's not a Queen choir, but it's ok.

I think sometimes they are good, sometimes they are just okay. I've never found them to be awful (I even like the falsetto in The Test That Stumped Them All). Anyway, while I do prefer LaBrie's voice, I think the addition of Portnoy's vocals can add a nice contrast to the songs, especially the heavier ones like The Glass Prison.
I also like his voice when he does harmonizing parts with Petrucci, although it would be cool if Rudess and Myung would get in on the vocal harmonies and add that dimension. I've heard Rudess do vocals before and I think he has a nice voice, not sure about Myung though. It would just be cool to have John Myung sing because he's John Myung.

As long as he doesn't do a falsetto like he did on Six Degrees, that was atrocious.

He doesn't sound good on songs such as Constant Motion where he is sort of yelling, but when he and Petrucci harmonize vocals it can sound really good.  Listen to the rehersal of Run to the Hills on the Special Features from the Budokan DVD if you don't believe me.

Forgive me. Nothing annoys me more than his voice. He cannot sing. He doesn't even sound good doing the metal stuff. Some musicians should not venture out in areas they will never succeed.

The music is better without them, but I don't think they're awful.
