Hello,

I downloaded these 2 concerts on Dime:

BABA ZULA (psyche-world from Turkey)
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=162536

ALEXEI AIGUI - ENSEMBLE 4'33
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=162650

I'd like to hear these 2 groups in next RIO festival.

BABA ZULA will play with Fred FRITH soon:
22 sept. 2007 22:30
featuring Fred Frith, Vooruit, Gent, Belgium
Program: http://www.vooruit.be/nl/productions/1133

If you go there, please record and seed on Dime.

By the way, several recordings (ROIO) have appeared on the dimeadozen site from this festival. So far, there are both Present shows, Guapo and Matts & Morgan. I've only downloaded the Present for 2 Pianos & Percussion so far, and it's a decent Mini-Disc recording, but pretty thin and flat sounding. I re-EQd it, pulling down the mids and boosting the highs & lows, and it sounds pretty large now. Magma hasn't surfaced as of yet, but a concert after the RIO festival has, from earlier this month in France...still haven't heard it yet though.

Unfortunately,  one member of ZAAR/SOTOS, Yan Hazera, has died on November 2006. It was really a shame. They have three great albums. Too bad for the future of our music. RIP.

I'm not so sure about Godspeed You, though. I wouldn't really class them as RIO, and I don't think they'd be such a comfortable fit. Are they even still together anyway?
there still together and they would probably be killed at a RIO festival

My estimation is that GYBE! would get demolished in such a festival crowd.

As for seeing Univers Zero next year, chances would be slim, Trigaux and Denis not being really on friendly speaking terms lately, I don't seethem reaching an agreemlent. Hopefully I'm wrong about this.

I hope to make it too.... Both money and being absent are problems which I hope to overcome.

ART ZOYD
ARANIS
SAMMLA MAMMAS MANNA
DOCTOR NERVE
LARVAL
GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR
VOLAPUK
MIASMA & THE CAROUSEL OF HH
PANZERPAPPA

MAGMA (performing "LA TRILOGIE" this time, definitely with a horn section)

What do you think?

Yes, very nice list. And I assume that some of these will actually be there next year as well.

There are several of this list which I personally would love to hear and see live:
Miriodor, Panzerpappa, Univers Zero, Larval
And I'd add: Le Silo, Far Corner, French TV, SGM, October Equus, Pochakaite Malko, Yugen.

Maybe the origanizers are looking here...LOL  Please, see what you can do? Big%20smile

You are definitely right about Godspeed You... they don't belong in RIO but they are a great band with unique atmosphere and... I would like to see them. Smile

Well it looks like I truly missed out. Here's hoping I can make it out to the next one, but what with final year performances and dissertations, student finances and whatnot it'll be a bloody miracle if I manage it.

Salut Brian,
maybe you were so overwhelmed by the Magma concert, that you missed the announcement that 2008 will see the second edition of the RIO festival.Wink

and speaking about the festival here are some off-concert pics taken in the 'Big Hole'.( the only two hours during the 3 days when the sun came out) The festival site was build on a former open-air-mine, where is now a sport site where you can do summer-ski, and water ski (when the weather is fine) and a téléphérique going down in the hole.

HPIM1315.jpg

From left: Chris 'Syzygy',  Alex (from progressive ears, very zeuhlish), Jose Angel (my father and my master!), Javi (professional drummer, from spanish forum 'Coses', Nostres, (very much involved in prog music and organizing events), Oscar (keyboardist from Basque band  'Rivendel'), Jose Mari (bassist from 'Rivendel'), the one & only Victor (who had presented all his friendsWink), Brian 'Royal Jelly' on the far right.

HPIM1316.jpg

same scene with yours truly on the far right (the good ol' ego thing Wink)

HPIM1319.jpg

going up to the mountain in the téléphérique, thousands of feet beneath the ground with breathtaking speed, will the cable hold, screeching suspicious  noise, tension in the faces of Chris, Flora'Miss SyzYgy and Brian
[ed.note : you are slightly exagerating here, aren't you!)

 HPIM1322.jpg

these shameless paparazzi, sorry guys no interviews today!

that's all!Wink

Great summary, Chris, I was equally enthralled with Present & Magma, the latter especially was a live event I'll never forget, like a collective flight to Kobaïa. Guapo's not my cup of tea really, but many people whose opinion I trust swear by them, so I assume there's something solid going on. For me, they lack any kind of funk or blues in their playing, but it's funny, cuz I heard then discussing that very thing over breakfast..."Yeah, Magma's got that FUNK!", like it's something they know they should deal with...looking forward to future developments. Any news on if the festival will be continued next year?

It was known from the beginning that the 3rd day was going to be the best day.

Guapo: Fantastic, excellent performance. Very dynamic and impressive playing from all the musicians. I had great expectations about them and they rewarded me. The "Black Oni" piece was the highlight. Also, their new song sounded very promising for the future. Nice public conference too. They were very friendly.

Mats/Morgan: I wanted to save my energy for Present and Magma, so I stayed only for 20-30 minutes. I had only listened a few samples from them and I didn't like them much.Still, I have to say that they were extremely skillful musicians, especially the drummer.

Present: Only the first piece was enough to make me travel into another planet.... "Jack the Ripper", from the legendary album of Univers Zero, "Heresie". Astonishing performance and there's more to come. "Limping little girl", "Ceux D'en Bas (suite)" from "No 6" and of course "Promenade au fond d'un canal". I think they played also a piece from the forthcoming album which was fantastic.
Present was the highlight of the festival for me. Let's make a prayer and hope that Roger's Trigaux health will improve.

Finally, Magma: Magma the legend. The adrenaline was at extremely high levels when they got on the stage. Kohntarkosz is an excellent piece, but somehow, I couldn't listen to it. The sound was really bad. The musicians were giving their best on the stage, but I could not be pleased because of the awful sound! The singers seemed to be annoyed  too and were making signals to the sound engineer to do something... I think "Emehnteht-Re" followed and afterwards "Hhai", "Zombies" and a very very long piece which I didn't recognize. The sound at this stage, had a slight improvement.  In the end, Christian Vander sang an amazing ballad, which was the highlight of their performance (along with hhai). In conclusion, I know that Magma did their best but unfortunately, the result was unfair due to the big problems on the sound. It's ok though, I was happy that  finally I managed to see them live.
