Topic: Camel’s Song Within a Song = underrated Posted: February 19 2006 at 01:33 |
Hey Tony, how can you rate a prog monster like Raindances so low? It's almost the equal of Moonmadness ;). Breathless is very underrated. I think those 2 should replace the overrated Snowgoose and Mirage. The first Camel album is better than Snowgoose and Mirage. Tull edge out camel for most amount of strong songs over different decades ;). But camel are probably second best career for me :)

Camel are my favourite prog band, as I've said many times.
I rank their albums, in order:
Snow Goose 5* (6 if I could give it!) The peak of progressive composition to interpret a story Moonmadness 5* Every track a gem Mirage5* Their most energetic album A Live Record 5* One of the finest live records ever Rajaz 5* Nude 5* A Nod and a Wink 5* Camel 4* Rain Dances 4* Dust & Dreams 4* Harbour of Tears 3* Breathless 3* The Single Factor 3* I Can See Your House From Here 3* Stationary Traveller 3*
I don't believe any other band has such a high level of attainment over such a long period.

I really like the first Camel album and Moonmadness. There is enough space between the two that is almost like two diffrent bands. Song Within a Song is by far one of my fave Camel tracks. Amazing drum work by Andy Ward, as well.

BTW, the Deram remastered CD features excellent bonus live versions, especially Lunar sea.

Yes, I agree with that. At the beginning the first four were my
favorites, but the more I listened to Rain Dances (after getting over
my initial Camel-itis) the more it fascinated me. And that expands to
some songs in Breathless (although there's some not very interesting
material there as well).
Back to Song Within A Song, although it's not my favorite song in
Moonmadness, I agree with almost everyone in this thread: brilliant!

I can't believe who'd call 'Moonmadness' weaker than their first three- for a start, its FAR better than their debut which is muted compared to the rest of their catalogue in my opinion, and is on par with both 'Mirage' and 'Snow Goose'.

Pussy's only album Pussy Plays came out circa 1969.
It sounds like a cross between, IMHO, early Pink Floyd and Caravan. It's available on cd and is well worth checking. Some excellent psych/prog guitar.
