I've recommended the rediscover of this Italian gem:

IL MUCCHIO

Il Mucchio

(Studio Album, 1970)
Review by Mandrakeroot (Andrea Salvador)
COLLABORATOR Italian Prog Specialist

4%20stars My review is produced using this release: Mellow Records MMP 166

My Rating: 8/10 PA Rating: 4/5

This is the sole album by Il Mucchio, 5 piece band from Venice. The songs are written by Pino Donaggio, in those years famous Italian Song songwriter and today proprietor of a musical publisher label. The style is a simple Proto Prog/ Psychedelic Rock with Symphonic arrengements (very heavy but also very light) and this "Il Mucchio" is one of first examples of Italian Prog. This is a concept on the psyche of the man of 2000 but today it plays very twisted (in the exposition of the ideas) because this concept was composed in a different period like ideology (post '68). In every case the music is very good. The music, in fact, is very dramatic, Psychedelic and powerfull. In this sense the ogan is used for to increase the components that they form the concept creating a really enormous thickness. In this sense if the organ was substitute from the guitar I have idea that the music has been a lot near the style of the song songwriter. The musical preparation of the musicians and the superior writing (and the not banal and suggestive lyrics) they do the remainder. I do not believe that to cite a song with respect to another one have sense because are all on the same plan. Rather how much I have written it is more than just for to understand this forgotten jewelry.

This is one of the more forgotten albums of the RPI. And for me it isn't a good thing. Since the quality is extreme high, "Il Mucchio" has to be in every serious and complete discography.

I had my hands on that but found a better one, for me at least, called 'The Return of Italian Pop' with tons of obscure stuff, interviews (9) with assorted groups, and lots of background information. Nice to find another independent source that confirms what we are doing here.  Think there are some groups in it we don't have here yet... but haven't crossreferenced the book vs. our site yet.

The book is little good for an Introduction on RPI. But I prefer:

Le Orme concert in Padova (Padua) March, 29th 2007. This is my impressions:

" Giuseppe "Michi" Dei Rossi it doesn't seem has 60 years old because it steps on like one of 20 years old!!! And Michele Bon in "Blue Rondò A La Turk" (single of first formation but published in 1973) surclassed Keith Emerson that he recorded this song with The Nice.
For me they have gone beyond what I expected (also for Andrea Cortese).

And you are played all of my preferred songs...: "Felona E Sorona" (summary), "Figure Di Cartone", "Gioco Di Bimba", "Cemento Armato", "Sguardo Verso Il Cielo", "Blue Rondò A La Turk", "Contrappunti", "Amico Di Ieri", one summary of "L'Infinito" and one summary of the beautiful "Il Fiume". In general they played like they had 20 years oldand not 60 years old!!! (Specially "Michi" Dei Rossi that he is a very animal but capable of to treat its car from war with the velves gloves!!! And Michi's solo is the best drum solo that I've listen in my life!!!). And Aldo Tagliapietra it is still in a position to using the voice like in the 70's."

hhmmm, Battiato. Mandy has recently bought his last album Il Vuoto (2007). I thought it would have been a return to his archaic electronic/prog vein but Mandy said me it continues the formula of the recent releases.

BTW, tomorrow is coming very soon.Wink

awesome...  and we made train and hotel reservations yesterday.  Thanks Andrea!

picked up two more Battiato albums last night.

Melle le 'gladiator' and L'era del cinghiale bianco

only need a couple more to complete his 70's albums.   quite a prolific artist.  Even his later pop-prog stuff sounds interesting, though I think I'll stop for now with the avant 70's stuff. There are other albums to get you know LOL

here's a couple of clappies...Clap  I found a PFM sample here about some time ago before I even joined the forum, back when you could download them Thumbs%20UpLOL, actually well before I joined the site.  A couple of years later, music-wise, I eat drink and breath the stuff. There is SO much variety within the Italian prog, it simply has never gotten stale.  Exploring the avant works of Franco Battiato right now. Picked up a couple more last night as a matter of fact. Fascinating artist.

there are lots of great suggestions in here if you go back through the pages here.  Welcome aboard.

IL SISTEMA

Enzo Merogno (guitar, vocals)
Leonardo Lagorio (flute, sax, electric piano)
Floriano Roggero (organ)
Luciano Cavanna (bass, vocals)
Ciro Perrino (drums, percussion, flute, vocals)

Often described as a quintessential band in late 60's - early 70's italian rock scene, this band from Sanremo gave birth to important bands such as Celeste and Museo Rosenbach.

Il Sistema had a three year career, first as a four piece, then with the fifth member Lagorio joining them in 1971, during which they could not release anything, but some good recordings were finally issued for the first time in 1991 on the double LP Il viaggio senza andata. A good sounding band, though the recordings show an evident lack of production, they were led by the keyboards of Floriano Roggero (like in the 14 minutes long Il pozzo) or the sax and flute of future Celeste member Leonardo Lagorio.
Classical influences are clear, especially in their good rendition of Mussorgsky's Una notte sul monte calvo (A night on the bare mountain) as well as some similarities with later
Museo Rosenbach style, but vocal parts are very limited in the unfinished recordings and the mainly improvised long jams make this an essential album to completists only.

After some relevant live appearances, the band split in 1971, with guitarist Merogno and horn player Lagorio forming Museo Rosenbach, while Perrino (aided by Lagorio again) went later to form Celeste.

LP
Il viaggio senza andata M.M. (MMP 100/101) 1991 2 LP - 1969-71 recordings
single sleeve with insert

CD
Il viaggio senza andata Mellow (MMP 101) 1992 1969-71 recordings - different tracks from the LP version

Still easy to find at honest prices, Il viaggio senza andata has been issued on both vinyl and CD with different tracks. No foreign issues exist.

Il viaggio senza andata - LP

sounds interesting...  another Celeste connection I see LOL.   If you were to rate it... how many stars on quality... we have much the same tastes I've noticed.
Need to give to it another listen, right now i would rate it with 3.8 stars Wink

I've just come back home from Padova, Micky, and I brought with me 5 tickets for Le Orme concert of 29th march!!!Wink

I've already talked with Mandy and he has confirmed to be there in Padova with us.

Raffaella, Micky, Mandy, me and my brother (who isn't a true Le Orme's fan...)...that's the very first true PA's meeting in Italy (after the one of the last year with Raffaella and the many - almost weekly - meetings within Mandrakeroot at Pickuprecords...

I wish you could come at Pickuprecords, one day, Micky...

BTW, have you ever heard Agorà's Live in Montreaux?
