Haha, another discussion about the definition of Prog! Well, I find that hard to explain, I just feel that it is...
![]() But I have always thought hat Nightfall in middle-earth is the better of the two...

"Complexity, virtuosity, length of songs, influnce from classical
music are characteristics of "prog" and not the exclusitivity of "prog"."
![]() That is exactly why I have separate ratings for "progressiveness" and "prog" on my website - and Blind Guardian are a very good example for a band that's not prog, but progressive ... at least on some albums. Have a look: Blind Guardian At the moment the genre of the band is determined as "Modern Prog-Related Power Metal/Folk" - I need to change "Prog-Related" to "Moderately Progressive" though, at the moment I don't discern the two tags when building the genre label. BTW: if you have a look at the discography tab it will make even more sense ... there you'll see that only two of their albums are rated as "prog-related/moderately progressive". |

This is a very good reason why the term "prog" is sooooooo insufficiant ( not everthing creative or complex is prog) and inapproriate when used as an adjective on this site! People say it is prog or not and the person who asked the initial question has to ask what the type of music sounds like?
I feel sorry for a new person to this site who is trying to find out what "prog" realy is; such a liberal application of a specific term is utterly confusing and irresponsible. Blind Guardian is a good Power Metal band (speed riffs, big chourus, many but slow transitioned time changes Etc...) from the German school. BG is influnced by classical music but not in any way influnced by "prog". BG is in the same family as Helloween and Angra (which is a compliment) and is unrelated to the sounds of Genesis, Yes, ELP ETC... They have a certin amount of complexity, inteligence, and virtuosity but not in the prog formula; therefore not "prog". They have great multi vocal choral work but yet again not of the "prog" formula.
Remember, when you look at new(to you) bands, people use the label "prog" or progressive as a badge of superiority, so when an intellegent, creative band that they like comes out they slap the "prog" label on it to mark them in the family of thier favarote bands. Sigur Ros therefore becomes related to ELP as "prog" and not related to Appleseed Cast or My Bloody Valintine which they are more suited for.
Complexity, virtuosity, length of songs, influnce from classical music are characteristics of "prog" and not the exclusitivity of "prog".
Blind Guardian is a good choice if you like power metal (at any level). Go to wikipedia and type up "power metal" or "Blind Guardian" and see what it says.

What makes it more progressive than Nightfall in Middle-Earth? |

I have never heard anything by BLIND GUARDIAN, but have noticed their CDs in a few shops simply because of their covers, which are what could be considered 'proggy cover art'.
Are there any sites with (legal) MP3 samples typical of their music, so I can hear what they're like?

I really like A night at the Opera too, I think it's the most progressive of all of their releases...

My favorites are 'Somewhwere Far Beyond' and 'Imaginations from the Other Side'. 'Opera' I had a hard time to get into, and still do.

^ I like the new album, but it's not *that* great. Those who picked A Night at the Opera as their favorite will love the new one, those who prefer Nightfall or Imaginations will probably be a little bit disappointed. But only slightly!

I tried listening to them a couple of times. Thought they were sort of Helloween on steroids - not very progressive and an annoying (sometimes even boring) vocalist.

Great band, but you have to be careful to choose the right album for "first contact":
Imaginations from the Other Side: Very Heavy, Fast, Technical Nightfall in Middle-Earth: Very Orchestral, Great Concept A Night at the Opera: A good mix of the above ![]() |

I definitely think they should be in the archives. I brought up the idea a long time ago but it was shot down then, too...
Oh well. Good luck... |
