Become a famous Oscar nominated actor, then quit acting to become a rap singer, then show up on David Letterman apparently stoned out of your mind. Or pretend to be, I don't know.

I guess then whatever you were doing worked.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I would never say "these socks are just average" in front of a pair of socks, that would be hurtful and unnecessary

It depends what you mean by average. Sure, you can say: "These socks are just average", but it would be absurd to say: "These are the average socks."
