Somehow I feel compelled to vote for PT and well.... I did. Nothing DT has put out since 2003 has really astounded me, whereas Deadwing, In Absentia and Fear of a Blank Planet were all amazing. FOABP being one of the best albums of 2007.

At first, thanks to the archaeologist who rediscovered this poll.
Dream Theater easily. I never heard albums from such a high quality as "Images & Words" or "Awake" by Porcupine Tree. Though they are the more consistent band, they never reach that genius to me.

Dream Theater, but only because I'm a fanboy. Porcupine Tree is easily my second favorite band.

If you're comparing these bands' prog-metal qualities then its Dream Theater by a country mile. PT have only produced a limited amount of prog-metal and DT do it much much better, they are the kings of that domain and I salute them.
However, I do think this is a difficult comparison, as the bands' overall musical style differ so much. PT are a totally different animal from their earlier days.
If assessing the bands' respective overall output it has to be PT. IMHO I don't think DT have produced albums to compare with TSMS and Up The Downstair.

Hey dude, isn't that the cover of a Gojira album in your profile picture?
Seriously, i'm not voting. I can't. There are very good arguments on both sides. I abstain.
Dream Theater is getting the bad hand because of their recent unpopularity with the prog community. Metal wise they're better than ever. Porcupine Tree is peaking right now, mainly due to Gavin Harrison. Now see, it's unfair to choose PT just because they're peaking. Go back to 99 and ask the same question, you'll get: "Whats Porcupine Tree"
EDIT: Also, how is Porcupine Tree progressive metal? Occasional heavy riffs don't make prog metal.

Dream Theater. Period. PT is just beginning a new era, they weren't exactly prog at the beginning.

It's still debatable whether or not they are prog now. Personally I don't see In Abstentia or Deadwing as progressive masterpieces. |
Deadwing, in my opinion is more of a movie soundtrack written for the screenplay Steve Wilson wrote. However, Arriving Somewhere, But Not Here and The Start of Something Beautiful are prog to the max. In Absentia, in my personal opinion is very progressive and deserves recognition as prog. Fear of a Blank Planet and Nil Recurring are also full on prog. Basically, with the exception of The Sky Moves Sideways, they weren't all that progressive until Gavin Harrison came on board.

SW would probably get a bad taste in his mouth if he knew he was yet again being compared to DT. Don't get me wrong, i love DT for what they are, but they shouldn't be compared to PT no matter how much the fanbases overlap.

For me it's PT! Hands down. Much more creatively diverse. They seem to experiment to a much larger degree even if they aren't as Math Rock as DT.
