I have to agree somewhat with
Jojim about "Aerial"; although I found several tracks to like, I think
that the woman has lost her edge. I also feel that her gift for
melody has abandoned her; most of the songs get a groove going, and
that's about it. No "verse, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus" songs
(with a few exceptions). The song "Bertie" could have been great
if not for the cloying lyrics. But mostly, it's the fact that she
never lets loose on this album. It makes for a lack of contrast,
chugging along at mid-tempo. Moments of power or delicacy are
missing in action.

I like "Why should I love you"! I think you have a point about the
melodies on "Aerial" but if you bear with it, you will hopefully find
it grows on you, especially the second CD.

This is probably not the best thing to post as my first message, but didn't anyone think that Hounds of Love was just a little too weird? I'm sure Kate is mostly sane, but most of her material is just too much for me -- I listen to some pretty weird stuff, too. Hell, I own a whole bunch of Penderecki recordings and find them to be less weird (Magnificat, Threnody can't outcreep Hounds of Love).
| Wow, don't know what message you were going for with the Manson photo, but "potentially-dangerous-and-mildly-retarded-30-year-old-web-s talker-who-lives-in-his-mother's-apartment-and-has-a-newspap er-delivery-route" is what it says to me. Creepy .
Anyway, I don't really see what the point is to these "most sucky song/band/album/artist" threads either, but since I'm already here -
solo sucky song: Sexual Healing - no one besides Marvin Gaye should ever sing that song
duo sucky song: Comfortably Numb w/Dave Gilmour - just horrid
bonus: This Woman's Work - not bad necessarily, but I really didn't get the point to this one
And in the interest of balance, some of my personal favorites -

Can I ask why you "purchased 2 lps from her"?
Were they recomended to you?

I read two or three highly interesing posts in this topic. I have to say that I like Kate Bush very much. Having said that, I really don't care if she makes prog music or not, but I don't think so. Let's say that Kate's music is a world apart. About her new CD, well... I read many different opinions and that's actually a peculiar album... the music seems to grow lighter and lighter... it's a sort of breeze passing by. I'm sure I'll have to listen to this CD more and more to make up my mind.
Should I add that all I said is just my opinion?

In fact, I'd say that most of these titles are pretty god*amned impressive examples of prog. But just my humble opinion.

Well said Dezerov, nobody should confuse Kate Bush with the stuff that
passes for "pop" these days. Westlife are pop, Kate Bush is not.

Boy, for me, The Dreaming and Hounds hit me like a ton of bricks on the first listen and never let up (and I have a soft spot for Lionheart as well, as I think it was the first one I bought loooong ago). I need some time for Aerial to sink in, especially since it is a double album.

Agreed. I just give it a try later on. Aerial means perhaps "not to catch" And that is what happens here with Kate.
On the other side: the new McCartney album fascinates me over the top.
Ok it's POP. But in a way it has also some elements of Prog, or let me
say, the feeling of Prog (e.g. "vanity faire"). This musical statement
can touch me. It's weird. Paul reaches my ears. And he is as long in
the business as Kate. But this is of course a personal feeling. And I'm
a man. I listened at least 100 times to the whole McCartney album
"Chaos ...". Just to say.

You raise some very interesting points there. There may be some truth in that an artist produces their best work when living with adversity.
I would have to disagree with you generally on Aerial though. I know it's all down to ones personal taste and I would agree that this is not exactly her best album, but I would say that it is better than Lionheart and The Red Shoes. Aerial has all the good KB trademarks throughout and I would say it is more progressive than the aforementioned albums.
I think also richardh is right about needing to allow these albums to sink in over a few years perhaps. I found that with both Hounds of Love and The Dreaming, I had to re-visit them a number of times to appreciate exactly how brilliant they were, especially The Dreaming which is very experimental.

I liked Kate Bush's music till the album "Aerial". As a male person she incorporated for me the eternal vamp and at the same time the innocent young girl looking for love, emotions and - perhaps - surrender. From her album "Red shoes" I liked "Song of Solomon". There she sings "... I don't want your bullsh*t, I just want your sexuality ...". That is obvious enough. The older song "Baboushka" is also treating the relationship between man and woman. - That was ok for me - as a male person.
The new album "Aerial" has a big flaw in my opinion. She is not seeking anymore, she has found. She has her little son whom she is loving absolutely. - This is a crucial problem in art. If you are satisfied, happy and well situated there is notihing you can contribute to art. Your senses are dull. They are blocked by your feelings of happyness. Kate is expressing her happyness on "Aerial". That is ok. But it does not meet my personal taste. It's a statement that cannot reach my ears. The music is flat, there are some birds ont the CD singing from time to time. Peaceful atmosphere. But this is not my situation. And perhaps not of many persons.
I would recommend this album to any new mother and father, or, to mothers and fathers in general. And if your are able to make money with that - the better. And for her little boy it is the money he will spend in the future. That's ok.
Art is only fisable in a situation of pain, sorrow, hopelessness. This claim is not too bad. I have heard only very seldom, that the oppositehas been going to work. Tschaikowsky has written his last symphony in a kind of agony. And that's what makes it great. If he would have been happy like a jumping dog before dinner the work would have been flat. This does not claim that we all should be unhappy.
Flat - that's my impression of the music of the totally happy mother Kate. I will make this record a gift to a girl that wants to have children soon. And for that purpose it's perfect. Happiness is a warm gun - the Beatles once told us. But does it help making good music?
|
Interesting but I suspect that is a deeply flawed argument. When musicians get together in a band for the first time they tend to be both happy and inspired..at the same time! As regards Kate Bush the latest album does show some settleness in the music but she has deliberately used this mood to create someting fascinatiing and slightly surreal (like the song about the Washing Machine!).You can only judge an album like this after a few years IMO.
