As for Tales, I think hitting #6 in the US is a bigger surprise than going #1 in the UK (where prog was bigger). As for Zappa, he actually made two appearances on SNL -- one as a musical guest in December of 1976 and one as host (and musical guest) in October of 1978. Sadly, none of his stuff made it onto 2003's DVD set of SNL musical performances.

How about Marillion scoring a top 10 and then a top 20 hit with Your Gone and Dont Hurt Yourself last year with virtually no publicity.

Why isn't this in Prog Polls?
|
Because I've never been to the poll section before and I didn't realize until it was too late that there was a polling section dedicated to prog. My mistake. If someone with moderator capabilities wants to move it, that'd be cool.

Didn't East Of Eden score a surprise #1 single with Jig A Jig?

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”
"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

I'd say Mars Volta's Frances The Mute debuting as #1 in Norway was rather surprising.

With science, you can turn a frog into a Ph.D. and you still have the frog you started with.

Tales reaching nr. 1 in the UK, because the album really asks a lot from the listeners.
Rick Wakeman, who didn't like Tales, thought that the blind support by the fans wasn't a good thing.
I think it is only justice being done, because I like Tales a lot

TFC is hardly a prog album is musical terms and reviewers never shied away from Pink Floyd, especially considering The Wall was an enormous "classic rock" success (the 2nd or 3rd best-selling album of all time if I'm correct), so It makes sense that it was reviewed. It is an excellent album, IMO, so I think it was quite probable.
Zappa hosted SNL! Wow. He was funny, but holy crap!!!!
