Had to give my vote to Joanna Newsom but it was a close one! Sufjan, Frogg Cafe, Anathema and Yugen were all very close contenders. What a great year. A high point in my musical exploration personally as well.

However by a LONG shot, the winner of the year for me is 'Major Parkinson' with 'Songs from a Solitary Home,' one of my top 5 albums of all time.

Other great albums:
The Books - The Way out - last album by these creative indie/electronic guys, they really did interesting things with sampling.
Charming Hostess - Bowls Project - Cool concept album with unique influences
Colin Masson - Mad Monk and the Mountain - I think this has been forgotten by some since then, but not by me, a standout instrumental/symphonic folk prog album
Lucifer Was - The Crown of Creation - this heavy-prog band released a concept album backed by an orchestra, every time I hear a track from this album come up, I have to listen to the whole thing.
Meat Loaf - Hang Cool Teddy Bear - his best non-Bat album
Munly & The Lupercalians - Petr and the Wulf - showed me that country music can be good, I think Munly and his related bands ended up with a small following here for a while starting with this album.
PikaPika Teart - can echo this one, great chamber prog
RRR - Il Pittore Volante - great vocally dramatic symphonic prog
Rational Diet - On Phenomena and Existences - similar in vein to Yugen
Shining - Blackjazz - their best at their brutal jazz sound

Agreed, and was higher in my list, but then these rankings often are fairly arbitrary from me. My favourite Beach House album is Bloom, though, but then I have spun it more times. I only got into Beach House in the past couple of years. It's quite the band.

First time I saw them I wasn't even in college. It was 2006 and they played at MassArt in front of maybe 50 people. Such a great voice!

Reminds me of how old I'm getting, or as wife would exclaim, "How old you're getting? You're already there!" It's all relative.

I had to drive one of my children and friend yesterday and played Teen Dream in the car. It was much liked -- had got to know various Beach House from TikTok. I might say that I don't "get" TikTok, but I'm glad to see the kids getting turned on to music I like, be it via TikTok, Youtube, Sony Walkmen, 8 Track Cassettes, phonograph cylinders or that "vinyl record" thing that has been trending for some years.

And I agree that a lot of years get better over time as I continue to discover new stuff. 2019 for example is much better now than it was. And to be fair 2010 and 2019 have some of my absolute favs, but just in overall comparisons to other years in the 10's these two come up lagging, for now.
While most mainstream prog fans lament the 80's I think it's a treasure chest of metal, avant and zeuhl. The 90's for me are lacking much more than the 80's, but again so many gems. I think the end of the 80's and the beginning of the 90's has little in the way of depth when it comes to good releases. My opinion.

Well actually, 2019 does still lag for me compared to other years. Nothing wrong with having preferred years. 2016 is one of mine. The 1990s is great for me in the mid to late 90s, but plenty I like from every year I know, as said.

By the way, for any jazz guys here, this is a favourite of mine and it has no ratings or reviews at PA yet. Having spent some of the best time of my life in Japan, I do gravitate to music from there.

It's Shibusashirazu (渋さ知らズ) - Shibuyotabi

RYM describes it as
Experimental Big Band, Jazz Fusion
Free Jazz, Post-Bop, Jazz-Rock, Brutal Prog

Really should be higher in my list.

Some not mentioned...
Hawkwind- Blood Of The Earth
Pineapple Thief- Someone Here Is Missing
Stick Men- Soup
Djam Karet- The Heavy Soul Sessions

2010 and 2019 are my least favs of the 10's though.

I think i would have said that 2010 and 2019 are my least favourite years of the decade until fairly recently, but then I discovered music I absolutely love from those years. Ultimately for me, every year from the late 50s to 2024 is strong with releases I adore. That said, most of my faves from those years are probably not as "Prog" as what you and Drew most and focus on like even if progressive in their own ways. I think every year has more treasures to uncover and so for me there are no weak years for music. It's more like More like there are years where I am more ignorant than others. I guess quantity isn't that important to me either actually. if there are albums that I love from given year, of the kinds that I would wish to spin again and again, then it's a very fine year for me. I continue to unearth treasures from many, many years and still find myself appreciating and exploring different music avenues.

Finding Lingua Ignota's Caligula and Weyes Blood's Titanic Rising from 2019 had a big effect on my music directions. And I love Vanishing Twin, but then I discovered that thanks to my love of Stereolab and Broadcast and things that groove generally (Can grooves etc.). My top eight, i man at least top ten as two of my faves came into another list, in this 2010 poll has had a big effect on me too.

There's always more to discover and appreciate from years. The journey continues. For me every year I know is a great year with great releases both known and no doubt still unknown. Great being subjective. I tend not to think in terms of good, bad, best worst as many others. I recognise my ignorance, my limited tastes and limited knowledge, but also I have found lots to appreciate when I have put in the effort.

Anathema
Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

^ No worries, thanks for mentioning. It can be harder to see the entries when listed like this, unlike my usual way of alphabetising by artist/ band name. It's something I wanted to try based on the principle that I tend to follow, and I have seen others do too, where I prefer to try to vote for and comment on one in a list if I can (and comment on if I don't know or like anything in a list) and then also mention other particular favourites. I find that can help with making it a bit more interactive, conversational, and sociable and lead to more thoughtfulness in the responses. I tend to more details-oriented than some and don't tend to treat polls like fast food in a way I might say. Like to hear about others not in the list anyway. :)

I am lucky to have had the opportunity, time and passion to listen to plenty of releases for every year from the 60s up other than 2025. Still, some here listen to way more new-to-them music than I do. A loved album will get mnay plays from me. A month and a half in and I have heard one album from this year so far (Squid's latest). The ones that excite me the most tend to be albums I have listened to over the last few years, and I have discovered a lot more during the past five or so years. Clivages is my album of the year in 2010, but it's not one I have played much in recent years.

------------

On another note, since I am not planning to continue this series for some time, but here are the top ten right now of my Awesome Prog lists for 2009 and 2008.

1. Natural Snow Buildings - Daughter of Darkness
2. Magma - Ëmëhntëhtt-Rê
3. St. Vincent - Actor [AP Non-Prog]
4. The Antlers - Hospice [AP]
5. Natural Snow Buildings - Shadow Kingdom
6. John Frusciante - The Empyrean [AP Non-Prog]
7. Aranis - Songs from mirage
8. Matt Berry - Witchazel [AP Prog-Adj]
9. The Decemberists - The Hazards Of Love
10. Sweet Trip - You Will Never Know Why [AP Prog]

1. Portishead - Third [AP Prog]
2. Isengrind / TwinSisterMoon / Natural Snow Buildings - The Snowbringer Cult [AP Prog-Adj]
3. Kayo Dot - Blue Lambency Downward
4. Juana Molina - Un día [AP Prog]
5. Rational Diet - At Work
6. Guapo - Elixirs
7. Secret Chiefs 3 - Book of Angels, Vol 9: Xaphan
8. Elephant9 - Dodovoodoo
9. Big Blood - Big Blood & The Bleedin' Hearts [AP Non-Prog]
10. Birds and Buildings - Bantam To Behemoth

I do hope more put up lists there. I'd rather see a few lists from some people I enjoy interacting with at the forum than the lists of a hundred strangers often. :)
