Mostly Autumn: White Rainbow
Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Phideaux's my winner this year, even though it didn't quite live up to the hype of its predecessor / the years of waiting, it was still a very strong entry. I hope they release more music, hadn't realized it had been so long already.

All Traps on Earth, definitely a strong contender for next best from this list.

Looking at the albums from that year, I listened to a LOT of music but few stand out in my memory anymore - I think it was probably this overconsumption of music that lead to me falling back to classical music the year after. I was just getting used to being able to stream anything that caught my eye. Most of the stuff in my library released in 2018 that I have a strong impression of, I listened to for the first time in the last couple of years, when I've started giving more time to music before moving on from it.

^^ I like seeing Mira's lists at AwesomeProg.

Because the question resulted in me looking at the top overall album right now for quite a few years in the Awesome Prog AOTY polls... Of course various years have very few participants this far...

This is the top album overall per year at AwesomeProg in its best of polls based on the various users data. I stopped at 2008 which is only how far I got so far with my lists.

2024: Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - of the Last Human Being (180 points)
2023: Agusa - Prima Materia (284 points)
2022: black midi - Hellfire (59 points)
2021: black midi - Cavalcade (41 points)
2020: Aksak Maboul - Figures (31 points)
2019: IQ - Resistance (31 points)
2018: KoenjiHyakkei - Dhorimviskha (24 points)
2017: King Gizzard... - Polygondwanaland AND L'Rain - L'Rain (tie, 28 points each)
2016: David Bowie - Blackstar (57 points)
2015: Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase. (38 points)
2014: Hiromi Uehara - Alive (38 points)
2013: Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing (40 points)
2012: Big Big Train - English Electric Part One (30 points)
2011: Kate Bush - 50 Words For Snow AND Steven Wilson - Grace For Drowning (tie, 35 points each)
2010: Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here (39 points)
2009: IQ - Frequency (37 points)
2008: Portishead - Third AND It Bites - The Tall Ships AND Ayreon - 01011001 (tied, 20 points each)

So happy to see Portishead doing as well as it did for 2008 (tied for number one).     Those 20 points are from my having it in number one. And yes, I am a Portishead fanboy.

Hmm, this top 20 is definitely starting to feel a lot patchier and random; this is kind of before I really started paying active attention to music being currently released as opposed to looking solely to previous decades for my prog fix, so there's undoubtedly a lot I've missed out on. Nevertheless, here is a list (Dhorimviskha got my vote in the poll):

1. The Nels Cline 4 - Currents, Constellations
2. John Coltrane - Both Directions At Once: The Lost Album
3. Koenjihyakkei - Dhorimviskha
4. Dani Lee Pearce - Feed The Demon Love
5. Jacob Collier - Djesse, Vol. 1
6. Nicotina Es Primavera - Perder Planetas
7. Animal Collective - Tangerine Reef
8. Orthodox - Kréas
9. Mats/Morgan - Live With Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra
10. Homunculus Res - Della Stessa Sostanza Dei Sogni
11. Palm - Rock Island
12. Reuben Gingrich - Gravity Flash
13. Owane - Yeah Whatever
14. Patrick Grant - Fields Amaze And Other Strange Music
15. Ryan Carraher - Obscure Sorrows
16. Bryncom - Suburban Leisure Hyper Capitalism
17. Sherpa The Tiger - Great Vowel Shift
18. Hakushi Hasegawa - Somoku Hodo
19. Kamasi Washington - Heaven And Earth
20. Zevious - Lowlands

^ So much great music and so much for me to discover and re-discover still from this year and many other years. I need more time and spins with Fractal Sextet and related, but I really like the music.

Well I of course approve. I love Beach House. It's one of my favourite bands that I got into over the past two years (was youtube recommended after I had been listening to some Weyes Blood and/or St. Vincent). My favourite Beach House albums are Bloom (2012) and Once Twice Melody (2022), but I like all of the 2010 up albums, including the EP Become from 2023.

^ Dead Magic is something! But as I said there are so many incredible records here. I should have mentioned Vortex by SONAR because that album opened up a whole new world to me with the Stephan Thelen and related bands. That whole style with all these new heroes. This album seemed to kick start what would follow. And give David Torn much credit for being a big part of that. I wouldn't be surprised if the latest FRACTAL SEXTET is my album of the year for 2024.

This was a great year, and lots of amazing albums here.
I went with Dewa Budjana, but honestly I'm more into the Red Hot Chili Pepper guy on here, as well as bassist Mohini Dey, than Budjana's guitar. Love this record.
