^ Interesting post. Very important albums, although the later Bitches Brew is the bandwagon one by Miles Davis that it seems many jumped on.
I commonly like to hear from people about more than one album commonly in polls, and read their impressions and thoughts on the albums and how they resonate, their importance to them, emotional and historical connections etc. I don't like to think about winners or losers in polls, or use that terminology generally. Music appreciation is such a deeply personal thing to me and very linked with my identity. I understand that people often like that which you rate lowly, and I don't think we need belabour that talking point which comes up often, and my only real concern with that has been that you often rate low without properly listening to an album. I don't like to rate at all unless I have given an album multiple spins over time and I don't treat music as fast food. It's there to savour and even acquire the tastes for over the years. A lot of music needs time to acclimate, and if it doesn't appeal to me after sampling enough of an album, and maybe reading reviews, to get a a good impression, then I don't bother with it. I do wish you'd do some more polls that only focus on your favourites and on albums that you know really well (have listened to many times). I would rather read about your emotional connections and history with the music you deeply cherish, but I don't expect it. Different strokes for different folks, of course. Here's an interesting thought about both In a Silent Way and Abbey Road:
These two albums both foreshadowed the entire upcoming decade in their respective genres (fusion and pop). It's impossible to imagine what the 1970s would have been like musically without these two albums being released first. You'd be hard pressed to find two more influential albums. I voted for In a Silent Way for unapologetically CREATING the jazz fusion genre, but at the same time, I would never want to be without Abbey Road, by far the best Beatles album! |

^ I don't always list a Top 5, but they're my five 5-star favourites in the poll, when sometimes there's only one clear favourite.
![]() I wouldn't be at all surprised if Captain Beefheart goes on to win this poll.

^ I like the idea of top fives, but not so keen on ordering mine.
Miles Davis - In a Silent Way. This is the album that got me into Miles Davis. "In a Silent Way / It's About That Time" became an instant favourite. I had heard Bitches Brew before but not connected. Now I connect with lots of Miles. The Pentangle - Basket of Light. This is one of the first Prog Folk albums I got into and my first Pentangle love. That said, if I were to put on one Pentangle right now, it would be Cruel Sister. Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left. I only discovered Nick Drake a few years ago -- I knew of his sister Gabrielle Drake much longer as I grew up loving UFO, and I've seen her in..., well, you could say I've seen all of her, and in nothing. Sorry, a tacky digression perhaps, but she was alluring. I actually heard Nick Drake's "River Man" because I found an article online which compared it to Comus' "The Herald" and I was looking for music of "The Herald" ilk. This song immediately had a profound effect on me. Sad, and poignant to me. It resonated deeply. Beautiful and it brought a tear to my eye. I didn't even know about Nick Drake's fate. This may be my favourite song of all. Also "Fruit Tree' off the album profoundly affected me, and that does have an ominous feel to it. Quicksilver Messenger Service - Happy Trails. Based on the debut and this album, this is a band that I would have expected to be in PA. It has been suggested before. More jam band than Prog, but I would have expected it to be in due to its Acid Folk qualities. Cavalry off Happy Trails,a long one, is my fave track aand what turned me onto QMS before I heard any full albums. Listening to this albums again right now, love it. Sounds better than ever. "Can you hear it in the morning....". Brilliant stuff. Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica. This took me years to really appreciate. The Safe as Milk debut was an instant love for me, but it is the "safer" album. TMR is one of John Lydon's (Johnny Rotten) favourite albums. Much love for The Who and Led Zep. Those two were faves of mine as a teenager especially. I'll post a couple of my fave tracks to highlight them. I'm going Nick Drake because his music (especially that album) and legacy has been so important to me and touched me. Edited by Logan - July 07 2023 at 11:00 |
