Yep, I said before that if this thread does not turn into a constructive dialogue with the OP, then I would consider closing this. This is not constructive or respectful and so, yes, I am closing this. If the OP continues to complain and act in a disrespectful/ snarky manner, then I will suspend the account.

I've suspected as much. Not the best reason for inclusion, for sure. Music unrelated reasons like that is probably why I think like I do. -when I wrote "no one would associate these 20 albums with anything prog", I didn't mean that there's nothing progressive about any of them. There's elements of that in pretty much all of these albums. I just meant that it wouldn't strike anyone as anything else than 20 various, iconic rock classics on a wall (although they do have more to offer). |

sorry to pick on you again but The Sweet were more talented than many more vaunted seventies hard rock bands. Fox On The Run and Action just on their own were immense tracks. They pissed their talent away admittedly but they were never simplistic (but yes they definitely shouldn't be here )

To be fair, Hanson actually evolved into a damn good pop/alt rock band after their initial success. After the whole MMMBop thing, they started fleshing out their songwriting more and added some nice soul/R&B touches

Not to mention extremely condescending. I would definitely propose a ban if this behavior goes any further

In all honesty, what is the point of this thread? You think Queen should not be on PA? So what?! Just because you dislike the band (or so it seems), no one should review the band, is that it?! Your comments are quite mean-spirited. I don't know what you think you are achieving with this.

Hi, This is downright wrong, and in my book something that should amount to banning an user. I was born in a Fascist state, that went after all the intellectuals (professors and the like), artists and educated folks ... to make sure they were kept down and shut up ... and you think that "democracy" is the problem. You really shouldn't be posting anything on music, since you are not big enough to show when you are incorrect and say/said very inappropriate things. There are many bands, that are a lot less worthy of being here on PA than "Queen" is ... not to mention that if you watch various videos (Wembley a must!) you can see a singer in control of an audience and belt it like ... only Jim M or Mick J can do ... that kind of respect and attention to a singer is priceless and shows an ability that 90% of all singers do not have ... many know the notes and the chords, but know nothing about the music itself, and the SOUL behind it ... I would suggest that your post (and maybe your idea) lost its soul a long time ago! This is sad ... that someone would even consider posting this ...

Or: please state clearly which adolescent commercial simplistic band has no place on this PROGRESSIVE music site?
Bay City Rollers? Mud? Sweet? Back Street Boys?

I've actually never liked Queen that much, and something like The Prophets songs which I posted, I don't find very convincing even as Prog Related. I have heard the Queen influence in kinds of more modern prog, but not that kind of Prog I tended to be into. As for the Prog Related category, it's kind of a mess. I like having the category but it is very inconsistent partially because the site's expectations have changed and some the owner has wanted, and also because some people presented more detailed and thoughtful cases than others. Having Queen is here partially, as a famous popular band, to bring in traffic. And looking at those top Prog Related albums, I would associate those Bowie ones (Low and Blackstar) with Prog... Not traditional Prog but the kind that embraces things like Krautrock and Art Rock with a sense of experimentation).
here is the top 250: CLICK And I've just been glad to have place on this site for Terry Riley and, I was going to say Serge Gainsbourg but he is not in (ah, I think my addition may have got unmade when the site was updated -- wish I had saved my bio). As for reviewing, in general I would rather people review newer albums and less rated older ones, but I just saw a review on the front page of King Crimson's Islands and that made me happy. |

I have always loved the first two Queen albums, particularly Queen II.

Queen are hugely influential on a host of prog bands. Maybe not their contemporaries, but bands of the 80s and 90s often cite Queen as a major influence. Generally, what I think this website and all other music rating/reviewing websites need is a move towards contemporary artists and away from the established iconic masterpieces. I'd rather see reviews of the best albums of the current year than the 1001st review of Close To The Edge - or any (old) Queen album.

-I presume? I
don't feel strongly about the inclusion of Queen - or Elton John - if
he was here. Because I simply don't feel strongly about such issues. But for those who do have issues, this probably wasn't the best way to address them. - -Thinking about it though, I do wonder if PA would be better off without this whole "prog
related - a progressive prog rock sub genre". I can easily understand why it's confusing. Looking at the top albums, this could be any random wall of classic rock albums at any random record store. No one would associate these 20 albums with anything prog. Not even related. When I could make arguments for the inclusion of just about any band of (semi)skilled musicians who ever took a left turn and made one or two long, ambitious songs during their whole career, is this prog related-thing really all that helpful - or useful? I was actually vehemently against the inclusion of Queen on the site when it happened. OK we have a prog related section and maybe they fit but my argument was always that they were way too popular to warrant inclusion. In truth we really don't need reviews of Queen, one of the most popular and recognised artists ever in the history of music. They were not ever influential in prog circles at all and cleverly exploited whatever was out there. Personally I prefer them when they were out an out a heavy rock band. Live At The Rainbow is as good as it got until they went down the artsy/pop route. Innuendo is a cool album as well but there is an awful lot of stuff I could care less about. Sorry!

The first track I would think of in defence of Queen being listed at a Prog site (in Prog Related) and as one that could well be of interest to those into Prog and therefore worthy of reviewing at a Prog site even if it is not Prog itself is The Prophet's Song.
If this thread does not turn into a constructive dialogue with the OP, then I would consider closing this. Edited by Logan - June 08 2023 at 22:31 |
