Nowadays whenever I listen to Stuck in Time by The Living Tombstone I always skip to the guitar solo. :v

Hi,

In the special with Jack White, Jimmy explains much about the opening and the run of this song ... and I thought it made the song better. But there isn't a whole lot of LZ that I don't like, or a "solo" that I prefer, though Jimmy is actually shy about discussing "solos" ... or JPJ and RP would probably knock some sense into his brain, about leaving them behind! Bonzo would probably throw the drums at him ... and say ... you play it yourself!

Again, "solos" are not what the whole piece of music was created for, and thinking that a "solo" is the song, is sad for me. The rest of it all is meaningless ... and in my book ... I don't think so! Again, this is where DT needs to do something about that guitar that is ignoring the rest of the band! It's hurting DT and has for the last, maybe, 10 years.

I've never been the biggest LZ fan in truth. They were one of the bands that pushed me towards prog rock. I think it's because they were coming from a blues direction and I never saw that as particularly interesting.
Another guitarist that doesn't do a lot for me is Hendrix so I suspect that guitar is not my thing. I do like Blackmore possibly because he subverts the whole blues thing. I supect you have to have an enormous amount of talent to do that successfully and Blackmore has no peers in that regards. Stargazer will always be my 'favourite' example of that. Crazy genius stuff. By that time Page's efforts were sounding very tired imo.

Great choice, but it's one of my favorite songs, so I listen to all of it. Pink Floyd might be my favorite group, but if I had to pick one of their solos, it would be "Time", although I love the entire song.

To answer an earlier poster. I did mean it literally, but if someone wants to "edit" - go for it..

When I put in "Stairway to Heaven", I fast-forward right to the guitar solo. I haven't listened to the entire song in a while.

Hi,

A bit more ... sorry ... I look at a band, as a team. Everything that is done is for the quality, purpose and the music itself. In my book, a "solo" is not exactly a good representative for that team ... after all Ronaldo still needs the back and the midfield to provide some service since he can't do it all himself. Messi still relies on teammates, although in the WC, he kinda played more as a midfielder than otherwise, as he is a great passer ...

My only concern, in a lot of rock music is that the "solo" is there, because it is the spot in the format where everyone does it ... and to me, that is way too mechanical and not enough musically exciting or defined within the band to make the music better. So we end up "expecting" the solo to carry the rest of the piece. Again, if my name was Frank, I would put the guitar down and then conduct the band ... until one day the fan can find the meaning and ability in the music he wasn't interested in. It's bad, and can be thought of as "mean" but how you gonna learn something, if all you are looking for is the "solo" and not hearing the rest of the music?

The OP's question is rather unambiguous and he hasn't deemed necessary these last 10 days to come back to elaborate on his intentions, so everything else seems to me over-interpretation.

And, as I predicted, I agree with Mosh!

I didn't get that meaning, with this idea in mind, the thread would have been called "songs with great guitar solos". Something totally different in meaning to what the thread title says.

^ If that’s the intent then the OP can specify and elaborate on the concept, but then I would think he would have said words to that effect. I’m taking what’s written verbatim. I’m with the get thee to a none-ery crowd, so here’s another “none”. Perhaps we have enough nones to form our own convent.

Hi,

Thanks a big brunch!

My only comment would be one word ... NONE.

And, honestly, I find it offensive within the context of "progressive music" which means that the solo can not have a "meaning" which fits the musical passage relative to the completeness of the piece. I find that bizarre, and perhaps the one thing that really turns me off DT in the past few years, when the "solo" part is extended and kills the rest of the band!

To me, it is either the FULL PIECE, with its "pastoral" side and such, and the ideas and thoughts that such moments can create for your imagination. But, in rock music, the "solo" has become an ego-driven thing that has hurt a lot of music ... like you go see it just for the solo ... and yeah, if my name was Frank Zappa, I'm definitely putting my guitar down and conducting the band the rest of the way ... maybe you can find some meaning in the music now, since it obviously was meaningless until the guitar solo!

I'm not sure many musicians appreciate that at all ... Daevid Allen and I had a discussion about that once, and he said it was bad enough that he did the glissando a couple of times each show! He wanted the completeness of the music and the show, not the show-off side, although his characters and acting could easily take over this part. But he stuck to the script.

BTW ... I don't do "songs". I either do MUSIC, or I don't! Plain and simple and if someone wants to solo go to Harlem, or the streets in Paris and London and do some busking ... might be the better place for it, and maybe folks will drop a few coins, and you can count $21 at the end of 8 hours! BTW, you will find in Madrid and Barcelona at least 25 guitar players that make almost anyone in rock music look like an idiot just doing scales!

Not exclusively for the solo, but there are songs where the solo is the high point that you look forward to as you're listening. A good example: Home Invasion / Regret #9.

Generally I'm with those who say they don't listen to music like this, however I will mention one song, which I actually like as a whole, however it has a really outstanding guitar solo while some other elements of it are rather controversial (and let's say not all to my liking, even though overall it still makes for a great song), which is Camel's Summer Lightning.

It's a hard concept to get your head round but I think these tracks are only good because of the guitar 'solos'. It doesn't mean the rest of the band are not playing well though or anything like that Tongue

Stargazer
Achilles Last Stand
Comfortably Numb
Whisky In The Jar - (Thin Lizzy)
Sabre Dance - (Love Sculpture)

The last is just a guitar solo that last's over 10 minutes. Dave Edmunds is just insanely good.

I've done that myself. But the question or challenge is: Songs You Just Listen For The Guitar Solos? and to me that means sitting through the whole song while waiting for the part you actually enjoy. Solos you listen to while skipping the rest, is different.

While I love the entire Odyssey album, Terje Rypdal's solo on "Adagio" still leaves me FLOORED after all these years!
