How do I become a Prog Reviewer/Special Collaborator?
"Prog reviewers" are people who have been identified by the site’s owners as regularly contributing high quality reviews of a diverse range of bands and albums.

"Special collaborators" also regularly submit high quality reviews, but in addition they participate in (or have participated in) the running of the site.

You would normally become a Prog Reviewer or Special Collaborator by invitation from the site owners. If however, you feel you have met the following criteria, and would like to be considered for induction as a Prog Reviewer, send a Private Message (PM) to "Andy Webb" (the Collaborator Manager) making your case.

NOTE: It's important to bear in mind that the following criteria are solely for general guidance, and do not constitute any sort of prerequisites or guarantee of acceptance. Also, that although applications can be submitted at any time, the processing of applications will be done only a few times each year, so please do not be impatient.

  • Submit at least 30 well composed reviews, which talk in some detail about each album. Ideally, the albums covered will be spread across a range of bands and sub-genres, and will not simply focus on those in the top 100. If possible, try to do a sequence of at least 5 albums by one of these "lesser-known" bands.
  • Contribute one or more band biographies for bands on the site who do not presently have biographic details. (With a little time and research, these can be prepared quite easily, even if you are not too familiar with the band. Do not however simply copy the words from other people’s work. Collate the facts, then present them in your own words.)
  • Participate constructively in the forum, offering intelligent contributions and avoiding becoming embroiled in personal battles with other members. (When applying, make sure to mention both your reviewer name AND forum ID).
  • If you can obtain the agreement of a current Prog Reviewer or Special Collaborator to support your request, that will also help.

To become a Special Collaborator, you will normally need to have been a Prog Reviewer first. Prog Reviewers who are willing to contribute in some way to the running of the site should contact a member of the admin team giving details of the type of function you would be willing to undertake.

Why is (insert band name here) included/not included on the site?
The site has a careful selection process for deciding which bands are included or not included. The boundaries of what constitutes "Progressive rock" will always be blurred, but we are committed to continuing to build the best Progressive Rock site on the internet. The forum sees regular discussions about bands who should or should nto be listed, and you are encouraged to make your opinions known there.

Why did I not get a response to a PM (Private message) I sent to a member of the admin team, or to a post I made to advise them of something/suggest a change etc.?

Please bear in mind that the site is run on an entirely voluntary basis. All the people who dedicate their time to the running of the site have other commitments. They have to therefore prioritise the time they can spend on the site, which sometimes means that they are unable to respond to you personally. Rest assured though, even if you do not receive a direct response your contribution is appreciated, and your comments will be taken on board..

How do I "activate" my membership?

When you join the forum, you will be asked to give a valid e-mail address as part of your registration. A confirmation e-mail will be sent to you, and you will need to click on a link in the e-mail to activate your membership.

Please note that some spam filters may intercept the confirming e-mail. If you do not appear to have received the message within a few hours, check your filtered messages in case it is there.

What are the site rules?
You can find them here: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13083

How do I update my forum profile?
You need to be logged on to the site to do this. Once you have logged on, click on "Settings" in the top right hand corner of any forum screen.

What are PMs?
PMs are private messages. They are like e-mails, allowing you to communicate IN PRIVATE with any other member of the forum. PMs are not accessible by the site moderators. Anyone found to be abusing the PM facility will be ejected from the site immediately.

How do I post pictures to the forum?
Here’s a good thread giving details:
http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12629&PID=1685998#1685998

Why can't I create polls or vote in existing ones?

Poll creation and voting is only available to forum members with higher ranks than Newbie. Once you've posted 40 messages on the forum, you'll be able to vote in prog polls. This was introduced on the forums to avoid people creating fake accounts to mess with the polls.

Reviews

How do I submit a review?
When viewing the page for an album you would like to review, click on the "Submit a review" button just above the first review listed. Make sure you are familiar with the guidelines which appear on the "Submit a review" page, complete all the required details (including a valid e-mail address), and submit the review. Remember to submit all reviews under the same name and same e-mail
address to avoid future confusion.

How do I see previous reviews I have submitted?
(eg. user name= Charlie Chaplin) ... Use a url like http://www.progarchives.com/?reviewer=Charlie%20Chaplin to view all your reviews (replacing Charlie Chaplin with your user name of course!) ... please use a %20 mark to represent spaces.

How do I format my reviews?
If you wish to format your reviews with paragraphs use a space followed by a <p> sign followed by a space in between paragraphs when you submit the review. Alternatively, hit the return key twice. To add bold, italics or underlines to your reviews, the syntax is <b> (text in bold) </b> , <i> (text in italics) </i> , or <u> (underlined text) </u> .

Why was my review deleted?
We are committed to ensuring that all the reviews on the site conform to the guidelines. When you submit a review, you are required to acknowledge that you have read those guidelines, by clicking on a box in the form.

If your review has been deleted, it will be because it did not comply with the guidelines in full. Common reasons for deleting reviews are:

  • The review just says this album is great you must buy it, or this album is bad, do not buy it, without going into any detail.
  • The review is not written in English
  • The review is incoherent, and does not make sense.
  • The review criticises other reviews or reviewers.
  • The review is insulting or derogatory towards the artist
  • The main focus of the review is points which should be discussed in the forum

How do I edit my review?
Reviews can be edited from the main website's user section found here:

http://www.progarchives.com/all_collaborators.asp

After logging in, simply click "Edit your old reviews/ratings" to view and edit your reviews.

Why are ratings without reviews accepted?
Progarchives is committed to being as inclusive as possible. For practical reasons, we insist on all reviews being written in English.

Many people, especially those who do not speak English, find it difficult to write a review which complies with our guidelines. For this reason, we allow the submission of ratings without reviews. This allows everyone who loves prog music to feel they are a part of the site.

Ratings without reviews however carry less value when calculating average ratings etc. See the Reviews guidelines for more information.
http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13152

Why is part my e-mail address used as my reviewer name, how can I change this? Can I see a list of all my reviews?
See the "Important" section towards the foot of the Reviews Guidelines thread. http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13152
