Great job Ian and all the team!
A lot of new music to discover. |

I like it a lot but only made No 20 in my selection because there were so many great albums released in the year. I think I had more than a few albums in my selection that didn't make anyone else's including the brilliant Arena and Glass Hammer releases. |

Vesilinja - Myrskyn Keskellä is my personal favorite. I would place it above all of those top 10 albums, especially that Klaus Schultze record, which was a disappointment.

Hey, that was #1 on my list as well. Great mimes wink alike.

Correct, I didn't, but then again, I'm not into the poppier side of prog which is where they belong having now listened to their '22 release. And, oh yes, they ARE in the Crossover prog category - I'm not surprised. Admittedly, it's really a good album so thanks for alerting me / us

I'm actually liking the vocals on Hellfire better than on Cavalcade; Greep's vocals specifically seem better integrated within the music and he seems more secure and confident.

black midi is clearly building on the artistic growth and popularity of their unique vocals and lyricism. I love it, though I still think they could stand to keep doing more instrumental cuts and even release instrumental versions of their vox songs.

I never fully warmed up to Hellfire but I love Cavalcade for its eclecticism and contrast which is at times abrasive and at other times I find it truly beautiful. I also prefer Schlagenheim to Hellfire. That said I very much do appreciate all three and listening to the three albums in a row all the more increased my admiration for this interesting and exciting band. I'm happy to see Hellfire at number one despite it not being my number one. Overall, I love the vocals across their various albums and it's a big part of what makes this band and these albums special to me and plays a part in differentiating itself from the others. The band does have elements that make me uneasy and challenge me and much of it falls right inside my comfort zones.

Agreed. I liked them initially, but the vocals remind me of a political talk show host. Makes me a little anxious to listen to. |

^ For me, black midi's problem is the vocals (or spoken words). I would love to hear instrumental mixes. I think I would prefer them.

Given the previous years' no. 1's, I somehow knew Black Midi were going to win PA's 2022 AOTY so I listened to their album over and over before casting my end of the year votes, and over and over I didn't like it. Hence, it didn't end up on my Top 20 AOTY. I continue to hope that one day I 'get it'.

Talk about feelings of inadequacy...while I know and own many albums by several bands on that main list, I only own THREE of the particular albums mentioned.
Voivod, King's X, Blut Aus Nord

I really like the genre, tend to lean more to the psych-prog side but definitely appreciate the Sabbath / fuzz side too. Your music comes up on Spotify generated playlists for me. I've enjoyed, and now that I know that a fellow PAer is involved, I'll go back and check out the discography. Congrats on new work getting released!

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Apparently the Collaborators haven't listened to the new Verbal Delirium. One 20th place vote?

I guess that I will join in. I wasn't really into it as much this year. I usually try and listen to as many new releases as I can get my ears on during December through February, but this year I pretty much stuck with what I had already listened to or owned.
1. Jonas Lindberg & the Other Side - Miles from Nowhere (25) 2. Bubblemath - Turf Ascension (21) 3. Magenta - The White Witch - A Symphonic Symphony (81) 4. Pattern-Seeking Animals - Only Passing Through (42) 5. Big Big Train - Welcome to the Planet (5) 6. Kaipa - Urskog (112) 7. Birth - Born (14) 8. Ghost of the Machine - Scissorgames 9. Fren - All the Pretty Days (13) 10. The Tangent - Songs from the Hard Shoulder (11) 11. Fromuz - The Asymmetric Rules (165) 12. Cosmograf - Heroic Materials (175) 13. Haven of Echoes - The Indifferent Stars (188) 14. Kalle Wallner - Voices (175) 15. The Aristocrats - The Aristocrats with Primuz Chamber Ochestra (209) 16. Steve Howe - Lunar Mist (213) 17. Porcupine Tree - Closure / Continuation (4) 18. Star One - Revel In Time (229) 19. Collage - Over and Out (81) 20. Kaprekar's Constant - The Murder Wall (239) I have to admit that I am initially disappointed with the #1. It was one of those albums that I listened to once and didn't enjoy. I suppose that I will have to give it some more listens to see if it grows on me.

next Friday, our first LP in five years!
![]() On a serious note, it's really cool to see stoner/doom/psych-prog appreciated here, we're literally invisible for any other music media (even most metal news sites) Edited by Prog-jester - February 21 2023 at 14:17 |

if the band released new music (since the rejection that is) they can be re-evaluated.
