Definitely get Tool - Lateralus if you liked what you initially heard, it is a brilliant record (my personal all time favorite along with Aenima), but not for everyone.

I think other good distinct choices might be:

Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane or Perfect Element
Queensrĸche - Operation Mindcrime
Fates Warning - Parallels (quite soft) or Awaken the Guardian (quite old and "heavy")
Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Dream Theater - Images and Words

There are tons of others, but I think those are the ones to check out first (at least I did before venturing to the lesser know prog metal bands). Rush in modern standards are not metal so I wouldn't include them into this list.

Prog metal's not a bad genre.  Before you write it off completely, listen to the album "Be" by Pain Of Salvation, with the lyric booklet with you.  If anything, you'll at least get a much different view than you currently possess.

  The only good thing Iīm getting after bashing The Flower Kings and metal prog is that next time I will place all my senses on The Flower Kings. Now Iīm interested ĄĄ. If many people like it, it canīt be as boring as I hear it.

  Metal prog....naaahhh. That requires too much of a wide mind for my taste.

You view get's more and more narrow ... btw: also stay away from Classical and Jazz ... it will only distract you from Prog Rock, the only good genre.

I would recomend "dead soul tribe" and their album Murder of crows. Prog-metal without beeing to metal. Baybe even anekdoten at their heaviest? Vemod and nucleus is king crimson with metal influenses. Norwegian Magic pie would also do the job.
It is said to be the first Test-pressing of the corean release??

If someone gets scared by something like Pain of Salvation or Symphony X then they probably shouldn't listen to anything harder than Yes.   (don't get me wrong, I love Yes)

This'll probably seem n00bish but..."Moving Pictures" by Rush might be a good start.
