That's okay. I'll just pretend Steven Wilson wasn't listed and move all the bands below him up one place in the rankings, as per usual.

^ Steven Wilson doesn't count for the purposes of the thread ( bands only) so you may have to choose between The Pineapple Thief and Wobbler (consistency and longevity versus total brilliance but lack of quantity)

I wish this was a top 10. The Grumpy one made a great point about Wobbler which had me thinking because he's right they are a band in my opinion who have released 5 very strong albums and I'm a huge fan of retro music. I still remember taking my daughter to a friend's place up the mountain years ago and having the debut playing and just being so proud while my daughter was just annoyed.
![]() Anekdoten Porcupine Tree Fates Warning Anglagard Steven Wilson now it gets hard... One Shot Riverside I have to leave out... The Pineapple Thief Wobbler

My current 7 Big Big Train Marillion Transatlantic Magenta Wobbler Spocks Beard Arena I would have put Wilson at number two but read that he is ineligible- so ignored PT in solidarity.

^ that cover can get annoying, and doesn't now sound as good as before. I still have quite a lot of Swans to explore, but it was Soundtracks for the Blind that got me interested in Swans and has been my favourite. And then of more recent ones, I slightly favoured To be Kind over the Seer (I like Glowing Man a lot too). Now I've been getting more into the earlier stuff like Children of God (have loved the brutal Beautiful Child when in the mood, but always like the title track) and the easier listening White Light From the Mouth of Infinity, which I have seen compared to Joy Division.

I love Swans & while the Blind Faith cover is one song on The Burning World that I skip much of the time, I do love that album. My favorite, of course, is The Seer (http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=44146).
On-topic...my favorites as defined in this thread ->

I am glad you weren't blinded to the allure, Paul. ![]() ------------- On a general Swans note: while shoveling snow earlier (we had quite the dump) I listened to 1989's The Burning World. While it has been (until 2019) the lowest rated Swans album at RYM for being as some reviews state, "too commercial", "too accessible", "too mainstream" and "a sell-out", I really liked it. The opener is beautiful, God Damn the Sun is terrific (if morose -- not the happiest of lyrics), the cover of Can't Find My Way Home is I think very good, and I just found an enjoyable album over-all. I like its neo-folk meets goth rock and goth country qualities. |

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Acceptance is a good thing, but we're surely some who would like to see that list looking somehow otherwise. I for instance certainly miss The Mars Volta on it, and Tool would be quite good, as well.

![]() To be fair there might not be much with most of those bands that would tickle your fancy, but I do think Guapo's album Obscure Knowledge has something to offer for 'mainstream' prog fans as well as the panhead contingent. But judge for yourself! Edited by Mascodagama - December 26 2021 at 10:24 |

^ Thanks Logan. I listened to Swans' "Blind" with open eyes and an open mind and I really like it, much to my surprise.
