The best year of the 1990s IMO, by far.  So good I had to include 11
Alphabetically

Albion - Survival Games
Il Castello di Atlante - Passo Dopo Passo
Clepsydra - More Grains of Sand
Collage - Moonshine
Grace - Pulling Strings and Shiny Things
Kaos Moon - After the Storm
James McCarty - Out of the Dark
Men of Lake - Out of the Water
Quaterna Requiem - Quasimodo
Red Jasper - Winter's Tale
Sagrado - Grande  Espirito

1. The Flower King - Roine Stolt

2. Gothic Impressions - Pär Lindh Project

3. Thud - Kevin Gilbert

4. Battle Lines - John Wetton

5. Boil That Dust Speck - Mike Keneally

6. Somewhere but Yesterday - Citizen Cain

7. Thonk - Michael Manring

8. Epilog - Änglagård

9. Promised Land - Queensr˙che

10. The Division Bell - Pink Floyd

I'm the only one who puts the album name first. I have this huge list of albums by year and it's like this, so it's a bit of a hassle to change it now. I figured it makes sense given the album is the focus.

Not a big year for prog in my collection. But those five I like very much:

King Crimson - VROOOM
Motorpsycho - Timothy's Monster
Mike Oldfield - The Songs of Distant Earth
Pink Floyd - The Division Bell
Roine Stolt - The Flower King

Thumbs Up

Anyone who hasn't heard of Mike Keneally needs to do some research.

Dammit, I don't know any album of this list. Got some work to do...
Not to worry. I don't know any of those artists or albums either. Embarrassed

The hell you say?
Here is a photo of my surprised face.

I wouldn't consider this a very obscure list. Most entries show up on at least 1 other person's list. Nordic Quartet is not a PA listed album. Probably a little hard to find. Laundry and Idiot Flesh are probably also pretty rare.

Not sure if I have ten for this year. In no particular order...
Anglagard- Epilog
Landberk- One Man Tells Another
Purple Overdose- Purple Overdose
Aragon- Rocking Horse
Psychotic Waltz- Mosquito
Bondage Fruit- Bondage Fruit
Bark Psychosis- Hex
X-Legged Sally- Eggs & Ashes
Par Lindh Project- Gothic Impressions
Material- Hallucination Engine
Wow and that's everything I had written down for this year.

Oops no it wasn't. Man I have these lists scribbled down and it's not neat. Missed...
Kingston Wall- Trilogy
5UU's Hungers Teeth
So that's 12 but I don't have an order.

Just a couple of not exactly Prog but still not mainstream:
Kyuss (US) - Sky Valley
Shellac (US) - At Action Park
Sonic Youth (US) - Experimental Jet Set, Trash and no Star
quality over quantity, and all kind of PopcoRn almost beyond

Dream Theater Awake

I don't know if I know any more prog from 1994.
Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

Frank Zappa - Civilization Phase III
Yes - Talk
David Torn, Mick Karn, Terry Bozzio - Polytown
Jimmy Page & Robert Plant - No Quarter
Dream Theater - Awake
Pink Floyd - The Division Bell
Ozric Tentacles - Arborescence
Versailles - Le Trésor de Valliesres
dEUS - Worst Case Scenario
Cairo - s/t
MKII - Burning Daylight
Laurie Anderson - Bright Red

I hesitate to mention Marillion's Brave: every track is good to excellent, but I find the album as a whole too long and too boring.

Epilog and Brave. Both amazing but the only other Prog album from 1994 that really hits me is Hunger Teeth.

Marillion - Brave
Pink Floyd - The Division Bell
Dream Theater - Awake
Mike Oldfield - Songs Of Distant Earth

That's it.  I was mostly listening to Pritpop and the like as I was at Uni.  Great days (but shame about my musical tastes at the time....)

hooray, I can actually make a proper prog top ten!

Par Lindh Project - Gothic Impressions
Mike Oldfield - The Songs Of Distant Earth
Eloy - The Tides Turn Forever
Big Big Train - Goodbye To The Age Of Steam
Cairo - Cairo
Dream Theater - Awake
Yes - Talk
Anglagard - Epilog
Vangelis - Blade Runner (OST)
Marillion - Brave

in general 'rock music' was making a big comeback, this was the year Oasis released their debut album. You also had the likes of Soundgarden, Green Day, Manic Street Preachers , Portishead, REM, The Cranberries and The Stone Roses making a big splash. Cool year for music!

My relationship with The Downward Spiral over the years has been very strange, going from obsessing over it, to associating it with a particularly bad time in my life and therefore wanting to purge it from memory, to the present time where I can look at it with more emotional distance and acknowledge it as the finely crafted musical opus that I believe it to be.

Clearly the emotional distance isn't quite wide enough yet... After hearing it again and ruminating on this decision for a while, it no longer sits well with me to accredit this album in such a way. The unrelentingly aggressive and resentful nature of the lyrics is what repels me once more; I think even later NIN albums were better able to dose or channel their negative emotions in a more bearable fashion. I have no problem per se with unfiltered expressions of anger and despair in music, but the one emotion that in my experience exudes most of all from The Downward Spiral is downright hatred, seemingly borne from some of the ugliest and most sinister forms of misanthropy. I cannot relate to it and I don't want to be associated with it anymore. If it were mostly instrumental I might have stood by it, but right now I'm taking it off my list.

By the way, your ranking of it on top made me listen to this for the first time - I love Ghosts and had sampled some other NIN before but the other stuff hadn't clicked with me. The Downward Spiral is musically very good, and I tend to ignore lyrics, however, as happens with quite some music, I don't like the voice much. For me he should stick to instrumentals.
