This was not a bad year at all, I had to dig far deeper in others.

Cardiacs - On Land And In The Sea
Art Zoyd - Nosferatu
Bill Bruford's Earthworks - Dig?
Kate Bush - The Sensual World
Legendary Pink Dots - The Golden Age
Thinking Plague - In This Life
Ozric Tentacles - Pungent Effulgent
Oregon - 45th Parallel
John Scofield - Flat Out
Fred Frith - The Top Of His Head

Honorable mention, exciting album, sounds very much prog to me:
Vladimir Estragon (incl. Alfred 23 Harth of Cassiber, FM EInheit of the Neubauten) - Three Quarks for Muster Mark
Several other very good "semiprog" albums released that year, such as Einstuerzende Neubauten's Haus der Luege. Lounge Lizards. Test Dept., Joe Jackson's Blaze of Glory is quite sophisticated; I also like that Steve Reich album a lot.

1989 was undoubtedly one of my favourite years for music!  I was starting to buy lots of albums and go to lots of gigs.  Still not properly into prog (didn't even know what it was!), but:

Are You Sitting Comfortably - IQ
Seasons' End - Marillion
When Dream And Day Unite - Dream Theater
Control And Resistance - Watchtower
Can't Look Away - Trevor Rabin
The Real Thing - Faith No More
Eat Me In St. Louis - It Bites
Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe
Gretchen Goes To Nebraska - King's X

And there were many other great rock albums that year too!

So it is. Confused myself because a Billboard award made it re-chart a couple of years later.

In that case I only have a top 9!

2. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
3. Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction

Embarassing Guilty Pleasure:
Transvision Vamp - Velveteen

I'll hand in my prog card now.

Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction is from 1987... Confused

Amazing three-part performance at the Barbican. Haven't returned to London since, but I saw Zappa Plays Zappa dthe next day and Wyatt's retirement and bookpublishing launch on the sunday.

Very fond of his 1984-album Géographies, so maybe I should check out this one.

Kudos for mentioning Lisa Stansfield in a thread about favourite prog albums!

Just as couldn't in 1972 when there was NO SUCH THING AS "PROG", I cannot/will not separate great music--music that progresses the boundaries of enjoyable aural and proprioceptive stimuli--into arbitrarily created categories. It's all progressive! It's all great music! It should ALL be celebrated!

I forgot 'Oh, Moscow' - so great to see much of it performed live at the Lindsay Cooper tribute concerts in 2014.
