Tool. Because it is an object and a progressive band. Therefore they are objectively the most progressive band.

Prehistoric cave wall painting artists.
Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

Hi,

It was meant more as a challenge than a cynical comment. It scares me when so many folks talk so much about their favorites, then put them in a conversation with some names that are/will be known for the whole century for their contribution. As opposed to so many rock bands that will never fit into that discussion at all.

If I made a list ... it would be only one, just about ... and it's not an artist, but a stable of artists ... ECM ... without a doubt the most creative and experimental label ever and the amount of music over 60+ years is totally insane ... and some of the musicians are way beyond some of our ability to even discuss them. As many of the albums I have from ECM, I still lack at least 100 to 150 more albums by others I do not have or ever got! But I likely have over 50 of these albums ... Gismonti, Rypdal, Garbarek, Haden, Jarrett, Weber just for starters!

But as far as many Americans, the two I have heard the most would be Miles and Zappa ... although many in SF from the famous era deserve a touch and show as well!

LOL
I wouldn't put it past him.
Is Steven Wilson doing a cover version of a Taylor Swift song progressive, retro-progressive or just plain crazy?
I've heard that is actually his next album - Taylor Swift and Beyonce covers.

As long as it's in 5.1, we will all love it...

I'll pitch Zappa as a candidate since he basically wrote post-music.

Hi,

I wonder how much a lot of folks here would know about Varese, Cage and even to an extent Sun Ra ... and just in the modern era ... what their great influences were to a lot of the stuff we call "progressive" ... they probably know Varese because FZ mentioned it ... but hearing it?

Embarrassed
Thanks Pedro, I tried to think of seven artists who left the music world forever changed, there are others of course.

Hi,

AND then went out and made sure that he did the singing himself and put the whole thing to an orchestra to make yet another impressive and insane piece of music together ... the vocals in that album are far better than a lot of the band's material ... and it might even signal things that he had wanted to do, that others could not do. But he did it!

And he was better than the others ... insanely so!
