I voted for both. Maybe if there wasn't a both option I would go for Abacab but maybe only because my preference is for Genesis overall.

I have never managed to get into Gentle Giant, or Genesis - so bang go my prog credentials.

It's great for me, so much so that I bought the Wilson surround mix this year.

I looked at the rating trajectory of the tail-end of their albums and really think its spot on. They could do no wrong until Free Hand; Interview was slightly sub-par to their extraordinarily high standards but still very strong, before the considerable drop-off to Missing Piece, which was very safe and lacked most of the eccentric creativity of what had gone before....

why pick one of the few genesis albums I can't stand ?  and I am not familiar with the missing piece ... so I better not vote though my gut feeling is anything would be better than Abacab.

I've heard most of The Missing Piece but not for many years. I would rate Abacab slightly higher, on the strength of Dodo and Me & Sarah Jane, but by Genesis standards I think it's a very weak album. After Duke, it was very disappointing. Genesis (Shapes) is much better. It has the edge only on Invisible Tough and CAS.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

What a sad/poor way to end this... record. What were they thinking??

It's easy. Creative artists are human like the rest of us. They don't have taps that the music just pours out. I think it was Benny Anderson of ABBA who said he would lock himself in the piano room for a whole day and if it produced 2 minutes of usable music he would be happy. Not everybody is like Elton John.

Dang, I hope he was exaggerating a bit. 2 minutes a day is hardly anything, not to mention it sounds like that's just the writing process!
Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

worst last song? I kinda agree, nothing special but still listenable.
Brazilian is not that good either, again, a listenable song. The 80s synths and drums in the song almost ruin it for me, need a special mood for it. Big smile

Well, I can't remember the last song on We Can't Dance off the top of my head, but Another Record is certainly in the running. I like the idea on paper. Give 'em a song that more or less tells them to play another record after this one, sure! But the execution is pretty limp and involves some story about some guy that feels pretty distinctly like he isn't me, so he's the one who wants to keep listening to records...the audience interaction kind of falls apart there.

It's no Supper's Ready anyway, lol.

EDIT: Oh yeah, We Can't Dance ends with Fading Lights, one of it's only highlights. Yeah I'll take that over Another Record. I'm not a huge fan of The Brazilian though...

It doesn't make my absolute favorites either, but I'd put it a cut above We Can't Dance and Invisible Touch, and a few others. It's mid-tier for me really.

Abacab never clicks on me, for me its a mixed bag, its not progresive enough and its not a perfect pop album

Genesis were caught in the dichotomy of tryimg to appeal to teeny boppers whislst not alienating their current fanbase...the title is w**k the album art fookin awful and the musical content shallow and trite...but if you like it, play it...some people like all kinds of stuff that other people hate...but Don't try and preyend it is prog...it's not...

How are Abacab, Dodo/Lurker, Keep It Dark, Me And Sarah Jane, and Man On The Corner not progressive? Weird time signatures? Check. Synth obsession? Check. Sci-fi/fantasy lyrics? Check. Unorthodox arrangements and multi-part structures? Check and check. Does No Reply At All just nullify everything else?

I... I like No Reply At All... it's fun. Wouldn't call it prog. Though the bridge progression is actually kind unusual for pop, as is the underlying driving keys riff, so I could consider it art pop. Same with Man on the Corner (though I'm not as hip to that one). Don't even know why I'm putting my opinion out there when it's probably going to get trashed...

Oh I love No Reply At All, excellent pop song! Those horns are golden. I think it's the least prog thing on Abacab (aside from Another Record maybe), so that's why I asked if it just nullified the prosiness of everything else.
