I seriously so do not care who win in these polls.....I make my vote and be done with it. Sure I have opinions of some of the polls, as do everyone else.......Just vote who you like. Voting for who is "better" is so subjective you could never win that argument.

Merry Christmas my friends

As much as I like Rush's 70's output, I became a fan as a result of their 80s and beyond output and find it to be all great stuff in my opinion.

Don't confuse my Rush fanboy-ism and fanboy name with me being only a Rush fan.  I chose that name, because yes, they are my favorite band, but trust me, I enjoy a large quantity of bands.

i see, it is tricky to come up with a username that hasn't been taken by someone else. (i had trouble with that myself a couple of times).

I was trying to guess who you voted for in this poll, but your avatar is at tad confusing Wacko .

IMO: Rush doesn't suck. None of their 20 albums should ever be rated below 3 stars. By way of contrast ELP, Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull and King Crimson have all made embarrassingly crappy albums.

But it's also my opinion that Rush haven't made any full 5-star albums in the "prog" sense .. nothing of the Red, Fragile or DSOTM caliber.

Also, their music (at least what I can remember, and strictly IMO) seems to be 100% jazz-free, which kind of makes it .. lifeless? I'm sorry .. No jazz, no listen Sleepy

Well, maybe people just like those albums that Gong made in the 70s more than Rush.   Why does it have to be any more complicated than that?  I have more Rush albums in my collection than Gong and I actually love Snakes & Arrows.  But the ones I have of Gong, I love more.  It's just a case of preferring that whole Canterbury-fusion-psychedelic mix, which both Rush and DT are rather devoid of and which possibly their fans don't really like all that much in their music.

The anti insinuation was bad enough when leveled at Caravan and now even Gong.  I mean, these are not some joke bands, but among the most well known and well loved ones in prog.  Not as popular as the Big Five, sure, but some of the DT/Rush fans perhaps don't realise how big a following a band like Gong has among prog rock lovers.

now that you all are 'even'.

Micky here,  Merry Chrismas everyone!!!

For disucussions sake. From the great McFerrien review site. A fan of prog rock, but not a fanatic. i.e. Like many of us, sees that when done best, nothing is better, but prog itself is no better or worse than any other style of music.

regarding the 'anti' Rush forces. Perhaps one can consider that the 'anti' votes as much for the fans, as it is the group.  It seems his less than loving thoughts on the group drew, and still continue TO draw legions of the fanboys to his site.

Doesn't sound so light hearted when you make a self righteous reference to your drug free existence.  Anyway, shots were fired and we are even now.  Wink

The pothead pixies reference that I made was a tongue in cheek light hearted dig at the "enemy" band.  Apparently, it got a few of our "not-so-serious" band's fans panties in a bunch.  Oh the irony.  I am well aware that the Rush men partook of weed and if I were to dislike musicians for being drug addicts I could pretty much get rid of my entire collection.

To rogerthat, I am in full agreement that Master Builder is quite excellent.  I also recently acquired Shamal and have enjoyed it.  I can't say that their Teapot Trilogy has much appeal to me; the music is decent enough, but the lyrics are pretty awful and bring my overall appreciation of the band down as a result.

Yup, well, music made about pot headed pixies need not necessarily be FOR said pixies alone.  That would be like saying everybody who likes Alice in Chains has to be as messed up as Layne Staley.  What about Jerry Cantrell's wonderful guitar work or (in Gong's case) Pierre Moerlen?  Master Builder by itself is a good enough reason to love Gong, I reckon.

It's not just the impact a band has had on other prog bands, like I said before most new prog bands hardly are prog anymore, but what influence they may have on all of rock music.

The problem I have with bands like Gong, is the volume of formations they went thru. The early classic lineup died after what 5-6yrs, a very long hiatus and all the motherGong, nyGong, planetGong variations that popped up, reunion shows....so on. Hey it is what it is for Gong.

Then we have bands like Rush, Marillion, ELP and even the Floyd, who kept and still are putting out material as the same group, there are no sub-groups helping them along, or pages of former members.

My point is even if I wanted to vote for Gong I have no idea which group, subgroup I would be voting for......I know who I am voting for when it is Rush in this case.

Well, Gong's influence extends well beyond Canterbury and associated music.  Ozric Tentacles for instance, who, while they are on PA, are at best on the fringes of prog rock.  I think, rather than anti fanboy voting, this is simply a case of a band that suits more square tastes vis a vis a band that's more off beat or avant garde.  Yeah, seriously, I would consider even Caravan pretty off beat compared to Dream Theater. LOL  PA has shown the tendency to plump for these weird bands over square ones (which was why I was shocked when TMV lost out to the square-as-square-gets Heep).

Neil was into Ayn Rand (not the other two, as far as I know) when he was in his twenties. He has long since turned his back to those ideas, as witnessed by some interviews.

As regards the whole drug question, I have never done any kind of drugs in my life, nor have I ever been interested in trying. In spite of that, I love many bands and artists who have never been shy about their use of various things of drugs - even the most dangerous ones, such as heroin or cocaine. In any case, there are a lot of musicians who don't do drugs, but drink like fish - and alcohol is as bad as drugs, if not even worse.

Yeah, I am aware of that.  I just found the approach of pointing out the musicians' habits to knock down their work disingenuous and hence mentioned the Ayn Rand aspect. If we have to look for musicians without bad habits only to listen to, it would be an exceedingly difficult task.
