It's probably been over a month since I've posted here, so I guess I'll say something now.

Although I was not blown away by the last bunch of DT album's, Portnoy's departure stunned me greatly.  I had a feeling there was bound to be a change in DT eventually, but Portnoy was not the one I expected to leave.  I guess I shouldn't be too surprised since he nearly left around the time of Falling Into Infinity, but the man I thought would leave would be the ever-quiet John Myung, possibly even James Labrie.

Don't get me wrong.  I'm not saying I'd want to see JM or JL go, but it's just a bit odd that the seemingly most controlling member of the band is the one that leaves it.

At the end of the day, I look forward to the aftermath of this decision.  Maybe this will give Dream Theater a chance to evaluate their recent efforts and somewhat revitalize them.  I'm not going to speculate why Mike left DT, but based on what he has said I understand his reasons.

But now people will be watching the 2011 album keenly to see if they pull this transition off.

Indeed it will. A lot of people (including myself) will certainly be on the lookout. I disagree with your statement about SC and BC&SL being skippable, however. I think they were strong releases, nothing over the top, but solid nonetheless.

I see Mike returning after DT's next album and (I assume) the supporting tour...similar (somewhat) to what happened with Jon Anderson with Yes.

Bad news but i'm not too fond in DT to be honest.

Serious throwback to DT fans.

On another note, is it true that Christian Vander has been asked to replace Portnoy?

I hope not. LOL

Well, I'm not a huge fan, but I have enjoyed there more recent work (in small doses).  However, it's pretty obvious DT has been on autopilot for a few albums now (or so it seems to me) so this just might give them a chance to head in a new direction, since Portnoy seems to have been the prime mover of the band.  Of course, it could also be a complete disaster if Pettruci writes all the lyrics LOL  (seriously).

If it means more Transatlantic (which is not necessarily going to happen, since the other members have plenty going on), that would be excellent.  Maybe Portnoy could be the next Flower Kings drummer?  LOL  (not a good fit)

Anyway, sounds like he's doing what he needs to do and hopefully it will all be for the best.

James LaBrie's solo album (Static Impulse) comes out this month.

Probably doesn't suggest the end of DT in any way, especially since the band says their continuing.
But I'm curious about the timing. Like James LaBrie knew he would have plenty of time to record and tour in support of the release.

I don't believe the decision had anything to do with money.

and knowing mike, he'll make reunion tours two months after leaving...

nahh money has nothing to do, is not freaking the beatles here, its DT

Not sure where you pulled that magic number from, but no way he's walking out of their shows with that kind of money. Plus I doubt he gets a cut of the merch sales.

See, I would disagree there cause he's probably paying about five thousand a night out of pocket for the Transatlantic gigs.

In my mind, it goes something like this:

Roadie walks up to Portnoy:  Mr. Portnoy, umm, the pizza guy is here.
Mike Portnoy:  Oh, great, tell him to put it over there, Pete was getting hungry, (looks around) where did Pete go anyways?
Roadie:  Umm, yeah, he was hoping to get paid.
MP:  (Blinks) oh, go ask Neal, I paid in Berlin
Roadie:  He's indisposed.
MP:  in the bathroom?
Roadie:  No, umm.
MP:  Oh, right praying, ask Pete.
Roadie:  He's also indisposed.
MP:  Neal got him too?
Roadie:  No, He's in the bathroom
MP:  And I suppose Roine's missing as well.
Roadie:  I think he's arguing with Australia or something, he keeps shouting Nads.
MP:  (sighs and pulls out his wallet) You know, this is the fifth night in a row that I've paid for the pizza.
Sound Tech walks in:  Mr. Portnoy, the guy's done fixing the sound board and wants to get out of here.
MP:  and let me guess, he needs paid.  (Looks up into the rafters of the hall, speaking to no one in particular) I'd like to point out that this is only the fifth night on the tour.

LOL
