^ It is crippling to listen to--  but sometimes it seems the tech metal is often the only stuff taking truly big risks both musically and commercially.   I think of Behold the Arctopus and Blotted Science to Voivod and CounterWord Experience (most of whom are probably passé by now).

But it is painful... I remember warning people in a review about the physical damage BtA could cause.

The unrelenting sound of it is wearying to listen to, the lack of textural diversity and kindergarten dynamics of 'loud or louder than that', overly compressed production that squashes the life out of any performance, the faux angst of the singer 'Colin' an ex carpet-fitter from Ipswich a.k.a. 'Belial' summoning infernal bullies to punish earthbound bullies who called him a t.i.t at school or wouldn't go on dates.
the conceit of thinking 'odd' time signatures = complexity just by adding or subtracting beats from forgettable riffs. (the list goes on)

You don't like Prog Metal with bullets, and I don't like it with PopcoRn. LOL

Sorry about that, Metal spirit is talking through me. Evil Smile

But I hope that you've seen this comment of mine:

And I'm certainly looking forward to all that checking out, and in fact, that'll be a new way to find new-to-me music comparing to my main one the last 15 years, which has been by means of the top lists I had made - and thus absolutely something else than "music finds me". Big smile

Hi,

In general, I avoid like the plague, any music that "belongs" to something or other! I find that insulting and not a sign of respect for the artist, even if so many of them sound alike, and have a tendency to do the same thing, including bad drumming, to add to the noise. Poor musicians in my book, even if the guitar shows some uncanny ability to do scales from here to heck and back ... like no one in the streets of Madrid and Barcelona do not have that ability!

So, if we drop the "style" name and discussion of "this or that", it would interest me, but otherwise, in my book the value and ability of many of those listeners is a bit on the shaky side with only 2 comments they can make and rarely being able to say something of value in regards to the music itself.

To me, it feels like the old "punk" thing ... half of it was empty, and just riding the wave of other's coattails.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Well, I think that it certainly has been the case with me, and my own music philosophy - even with some limitations and preferences as well, for sure.

I can tell that I enjoy very much the Metal sound in general, and curiously enough, it first came to me at a rather advanced age,
and today I'm quite an old chap, but still going Metal strong. Big smile

It's been my pleasure David; sorry for the delay in replaying, but I'm on late shifts at the moment.

Actually, I do find that hard to believe, not because mobile phones are such wonderful things and how could you be without one, but because there are forces at work pushing us all into having a smart phone simply to prove who we are.

At the risk of another 'Off-topic' post (apologies to Mike for this), but I feel the need to point out that like Paul, I also do not own a mobile phone of my own and never have had. I am forced to have one for work purposes, but am strictly not allowed to use it for personal reasons (PA, ebay, Facebook, personal calls etc).

I do understand that this stance is becoming more difficult, but my Internet Bank agree to allow me to confirm payments via email rather than mobile text, while Paypal occasionally need verification and still do so via a landline automated message, with a code I put online via my laptop. I can see a time when I'm going to be forced down that route, although it will never become a 'mobile' mobile if that makes sense; it will just sit next to my router, where the landline does now.

I am lead to believe that BT have plans to pull the plug on landlines by 2025 as they will no longer be cost effective, which will force me into the above, but I fear for the resulting vulnerability of the older generation... Sue's mum is in her late 80's, has no mobile or internet connection. She lives 80 mins away and we can only communicate with her through our landline...

That's quite an eclectic mix you have there David! I haven't got anything overly original to say, but here are a few suggestions:

Fates Warning  (USA)          The Spectre Within                         (Prog, a. 2014)   (1985)

The next logical step would be FW: Awaken The Guardian, though I think Parallels is the strongest of their early albums. You might like to try Redemption: The Fullness Of Time.

Psychotic Waltz  (USA)         Into the Everflow                         (Prog, a. 2010)    (1992)

Obviously, PW: A Social Grace goes with the above; then you might like to try Dead Soul Tribe: A Murder Of Crows (also Buddy Lackey); also give Zero Hour: Specs Of Pictures Burnt Beyond a try.

Gordian Knot  (USA)            Gordian Knot                                (Prog, a. 2009)    (1999)

Likewise Zero Hour again, also Cynic: Focus; I'd also thrown in Arcturus: Sham Mirrors

Tool                                    Lateralus                             (Alternative/Prog, a. 2010)   (2001)

A Perfect Circle goes without saying... also Soen: Tellurian

Aesma Daeva  (USA)            The Eros of Frigid Beauty      (Symph/Goth/Prog, a. 2022 Tongue) (2001)

I'm not overly familiar with them, but from the bits I've heard, Therion and possibly Haggard would be my go to for comparisons...

Taal  (F)                              Skymind                                         (Prog, a. 2011)   (2002)

Heard the name, but I'm completely unfamiliar with them.

OSI  (USA)                          Office Of Strategic Influence               (Prog, a. 2012)   (2003)

I think you know the drill here; Fates; Kevin Moore's Chroma Key (Dead Air For Radios), Porcupine Tree (Lightbulb Sun era) and of course, the two bands below...

Indukti  (PL)                        S.U.S.A.R.                                       (Prog, a. 2011)    (2004)

Riverside  (PL)                     Second Life Syndrome                      (Prog, a. 2018)   (2005)

Two superb albums... your go-to's are all listed above, along with Lunatic Soul...

Overall, I would also throw in Wastefall: Self Exile if you haven't heard it?

I can tell that I like best heavy and organic, not synthetic sound, and not much Pop-influence.
