As a relative newcomer to this wonderful music, thank you all for your insights.  I'll enjoy reading your recommendations--I fairly recently purchased about 20 cds from ProgQuebec, so I have a lot of great music to try to assimilate over the next few months!  Big smile

May I suggest you give this Quebecois band a try:

HUNE

5 stars My favorite album of 2009!

HUNE's first album, "De l'Autre Côté du Monde," is a fabulous debut full of memorable melodies, dense textures, and wonderful vocals. HUNE appears to be the brainchild of guitarist (multi-instrumentalist?) Daniel Couturier, with vocals provided by André Bourget. With influences predominantly coming from England (I detect PINK FLOYD and KING CRIMSON most strongly) as well as from their native Quebec (SLOCHE, OCTOBRE, ERE G), HUNE provides a great synthesis of these diverse styles. The atmospheric moods of PINK FLOYD are particularly seen on the title track (a 25 minute opus) and the closing track, "Mission en Mer." Textures in the style of KING CRIMSON are scattered throughout all the songs. There are waves of mellotron, a busy rhythm section, Gilmour-esque minimalistic but singing guitar solos, more complex guitar textures often augmented by piano or organ, and the strong vocal harmonies of Bourget, used sparingly but quite effectively.

The title track is 25 minutes long and owes a large debt to the atmospheric moods of PINK FLOYD, evoking thoughts at times of "Shine On." The mood, initially dreamlike and slow, is provided by layers of keyboards playing dense chords, underlying acoustic guitar. The pace picks up considerably about 8 minutes in, eventually settling into Frippesque guitar textures. The vocals don't come until the song is nearly over, but when they do it eases some of the instrumental tension that has been building.

"Citadelle" showcases flowing melodic lines of keyboards, vocals, and singing guitar over halting rhythms and drum fills, many of which are wonderfully echoed by the bass. It's a complex arrangement that seems less so because of the contrasting melodies. My favorite passage occurs about nine minutes in, when there is a Crimsonian riff played over throbbing bass and mellotron--wow!!

Probably my favorite track is "La Lettre de Marque." Not only is the melody the most memorable on the album, but I love the section about three minutes in where stuttering bass and drums echo one another over mellotron, with soaring, shifting guitar licks fading in and out?man, it's just amazing. For good measure, the passage is reprised as the song fades out.

Overall, this is such an enjoyable album, one which really has left its mark on me. Greg Walker gives the album his coveted "essential!" rating, and KinesisCD says, "Without hyperbole, had this album been released in France at least 30 years earlier, it would today be considered one of the classic French progressive albums." I have to agree with them both wholeheartedly (noting that it's from Quebec, not France) and give it my unqualified praise. Cinq etoiles. Hune De lAutre Côté du Monde album cover

I do agree that The Medium were among the first band of prog nature in Québec, but they were more of the proto-prog tinged psychedelia nature than genuine prog rock IMHO.
Others would argue that L'Infonie were proggin out as early as 1967 for that matter!
The Medium,no question should be on PA but I still believe that WD.Fisher delivered an album that was closer to prog as we came to know it(Beggars Opera,Rare Bird,Gracious,Spring, early Yes and Genesis....) than the Medium who's brand of rock owes as much to Iron Butterfly,Steppenwolf,Vanilla Fudge and other period psych as it does to The Nice who also owes a lot to psych.
Tha is not to put down The Medium or your fine opinion though.I do agree that The Medium were pioneers in Québec.Wink

Oh, nice. Good job, Hugues! Smile
I'm writing Guigou Chenevier's biography now, but after that, maybe I'll write.
But I'm currently working on the addition of multiple RIO/Avant artists, including some from Québec like Bernard Falaise, Klaxon Gueule, Ensemble SuperMusique, et cetera, et cetera.

I got a copy of L'Infonie's Vol 3 a few months ago for 10$

Walter Boudreau and Raoul Duguay from l'Infonie performed Terry Rilley's in C in a church here last year. It was a little too didactic but interesting nonetheless.  333 participants!

You should check out Vol. 33 (Mantra) if you are curious to hear a 1970 rendition of In C by Boudreau and his friends. (Not pure Prog but close enough)
I agree that there are some fine record stores  in Montreal, but it's still hard to find some rare and obscure treasures such as Agape,Medium,WD.Fisher,Eden,1001 est Crémazie,ect... at an affordable price.
But your Infonie album for 10 buck is a nice score!Wink

Another band that comes to mind;

The Souls of Inspyration. Not sure if they fit in the Québec thread as I think they were from Ontario but they had a couple of Québecois musicians and have been living in Sherbrooke for awhile.Anyway, they were from Canada and were of prog nature.
Actually they remind me a bit of Mashmakhan. They were a late 60's early 70's band that sounds just like that;psych tinged early prog a la WD Fisher, early Morse Code Transmission,Dionysos,ect...
Proto prog?Maybe psych-space?

I have albums by ;

Man Made; A band that released an album back in 75(not sure). The artwork have to be seen to be believe!Wacko
The music is a eclectic mix of bluesrock, jazz fusion and psych.Singer sounds a lot like Arthur Brown. There are some horns on it played by members of VEBB,Roger Walls.Side two is a 20 minutes epic that starts mellow and slwowly builds up.Cool stuff and definetely PA material.

Another obscurity I have is Lagagnamo. They were from Québec city and released and album entitled ''saspeupu'' in 75.Famous blues guitarist Bob Walsh plays on it as well as members of Ungava.
Once again we are treated to a melting pot of styles;blues, jazz, psych weird sounds...it too features a sidelong cut similar in parts to early Soft Machine and Mothers.
The album is very rare as it was privatly pressed and has low-fi sound as it was recorded live in a bar.
But still PA material I think.

Pierre Nadeau's only(?) solo album ''Extra-ordinaire) features almost all of the core members of VEBB and sound a bit like them, naturally ,although mellower and without the funkiness of VEBB.
Soft fusion is what comes to mind but not the Kenny G kind of cheesyness!Shocked
More like Camel,Focus or even Rousseau's quieter side.
Still PA material.

p.s. sorry for the late entry to the debate.
They were more of a novelty band I would say. One of the members even said so himself in a recent interview.

Syrinx was actually a Toronto band lead by John Mills Cockell.  Was primarily a synth band - Their album "Gateway" is excellent (also sometimes listed under JM Cockell)  Somewhat similiar to early Synergy overlaid with some Mel Collins sax.

Of course Mashmakhan should be in psych....just as Ungava who should be in heavy prog instead of folk, imho.

William D. Fisher was a very interesting band. Their album has 5 relatively long tracks.

They remind me, I don't why, of the times when the university radio station, CKRL-FM, in Québec City, was recording and playing many progressive bands who never released any albums. Some of them were : Way-Out, Oculus, Rubicon, Délima, Sedlitz (spelling?). I have some of their music on tape of bad quality.
