Yeah, well, it's not, unfortunately.

Now I'd like to share some very dense dark ambient with you. Saćad is an electronic music duo from Toulouse, France that primarily make a very claustrophobic and somehow angelic dark ambient, and this Raincoats EP is one of my favorites by them that was released earlier this year in June. Most music in the dark ambient category is highly cinematic, or reaches a certain level of cheapness that only reminds the listener of some Lord of the Rings RPG or something, but Saćad's version of the genre has none of the rattling chains and demonic growls and instead opts for the sounds of harsh wind and distant celestial choirs from the most appealing of sirens. Also, when compared to most dark ambient, I'd go as far as to say that Saćad is probably the "happiest" dark ambient I've heard. Enjoy!

Don't struggle with the Con. Just admit him in your heart and in your brain.

I'm happy to say that I've found some free Conrad Schnitzler recordings that I can share with all of you. Conrad Schnitzler is, of course, one of the seminal figures in both the krautrock genre and what we call progressive electronic, and he has previously worked with other artists such as Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream, and he founded the Zodiac Free Arts Club with Hans Joachim Roedelius. This collection of recordings, titled Tracks from the Ivory Tower (courtesy of TIBProd.), is a great representation of Schnitzler's more experimental side. In addition to being experimental electronic music, these recordings feature quite a bit of acoustic percussion of all sorts and piano, which makes this free set a rather diverse collection compared to some of his studio albums. I have absolutely no idea when these tracks were recorded, but I suppose that isn't really important. Unfortunately, Conrad Schnitzler passed away this year in August, so I've decided to add these recordings to my blog as a tribute. Enjoy!

Marslydhode by Lydhode is an album that I discovered earlier this year, and has remained one of my favorite experimental ambient albums since. For just over 32 minutes, this single track continually dives into pure darkness without sounding like the cinematic "dark ambient" that can sometimes be overdone and cheesy. The darkness on this album is achieved through sparse droning/ waving electronic minimalism intertwined with organic recordings of chimes, percussive knocking, birds, crickets, etc.. A propulsive beat from a beat machine makes a short appearance near the beginning of the album, which admittedly is kind of weird, but it doesn't subtract much from the rest of the track, and the elements of harsh noise near the last few minutes make up for it, in my opinion. In comparison to the other experimental ambient albums I've recommended in the past, Marslydhode has a lot more density to it and definitely plenty to digest even after multiple listens. Also unique to my blog, this entry is actually included in the PA database, so you can look at it or read my crap review. I previously had an interview set up with these guys to add to the interview forums, but they've completely ignored me and I'm kind of annoyed, but I still like their music. Here's the download link directly from their record label. Enjoy!

Wow, this sounds pretty awesome, thanks for the recommendation.

Alright, so this next suggestion isn't going to be even lightly progressive electronic, but it is pretty awesome. This album is called λόγος (inorite) and it is by a project called The Log.Os. So, basically what you have here is some lightly glitchy downtempo trip-hop with strong leans in R&B/soul music that stays quite dark throughout. Normally I don't really enjoy vocals in my chill electronic music, but the many guest vocalists (I do not know who they are) do a really good job of not being incredibly annoying. I think if I had to describe this album in one word, it probably be sexy because that's how I feel while listening to it. I believe that everyone should feel this way. One downside to this album is that the genre tags are labeled "post-genre" which is just the most pretentious thing I've seen all day, but whatever, I forgive and forget. Also, yes, I stole this album from Anthony Fantano (theneedledrop.com), but it was a free download and I thought it was pretty damn worthy of being forwarded to my fellow progressive music fans who've decided to not be close-minded (hai guise). Grab yourself a cup of hot tea, turn off the lights, lay back in your chair, and relax to the wonderful sounds of λόγος.

The Log.Os - λόγος download

Enjoy :D
