If I the prog world limit is in place I think it will have to be either 9-29-045 by Green Carnation or the final part of Gazpachos Massive Illusion.
If we remove the prog requirement it would easily be Vallåt Från Jämtland by Jan Johansson closely followed by Flamenco Sketches from the second greatest jazz album of all time.
Pink Floyd "Echoes" and "Atom Heart Mother" Neurosis "Falling Unknown" King Crimson "Starless" Frank Zappa "Peaches En Regalia" Mastodon "The Last Baron"

V: The New Mythology Suite by Symphony X.
Good choice !! It's in my top 3 of all time. Also Collage's Moonshine always blew me away same as Clepsydra's Alone. And of course my top fav ever Pendragon's Not of this World
Where classical music beauties are concerned: Grieg's Holberg Suite, Tchaikowsky's, Mendelssohn's and Beethoven's violinconcerto's are crackers too.

This is THE most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard:
The first time that I listened to this I wasn't sure, the second time I was completely blown away! this is a wonderful piece of music.
Exactly! The first time I only played it for about a minute and thought, meh. But when I came back to it and listened to the piece in full, I was, as you said... Blown away!

In progressive music that is (if we counted classical Beethovens String Quartet No.14 would win by a mile)
for me it has got to be Supper's Ready for the combination of amazing music and lyrics
and also Song of Scheherazade is hard to forget
any other suggestions?
sorry but for me Beethoven wouldn't stand a chance against Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante or Gorecki's 3rd Symphony, - as for progressive music I just can't decide!
i meant it as a personal preference when i posted it but looking back it does look like i am stating it as an indisputable fact so my bad on that one

So many to choose from. Everyone knows the classics like Comfortably Numb, Starless, and Supper's Ready so I'll name some that I have just recently discovered mainly through Prog Archives just to prove that beautiful music is still being written.
1) Agalloch - In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion
2) Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Dead Flag Blues
3) Anathema - Flying....Also Better off Dead
4) Baroness - Rays on Pinion
5) Black Mountain - Heart of Snow
6) The Dear Hunter - The Lake and the River
7) Devin Townsend - Deep Peace
8) Kayo Dot - Manifold Curiosity
9) Mostly Autumn - Heroes Never Die
10) No-man - Wherever there is Light
11) Oceansize - Music for a Nurse ...Also Ornament/The Last Wrongs
12) Orphaned Land - Building the Ark
130 Pineapple Thief - Remember Us
14) Russian Circles - Verses
15) Sigur Ros - Svefn-g-englar
16) Silver Mt Zion - Mountains Made of Steam
17) Tortoise - Crest
It's good to know there is still good quality music out there. If only we could get more people to listen to it.
