Well, Univers Zero's Heresie is quite possibly the darkest album I have ever heard, but I don't consider it a masterpiece.

If it has to be dark and a masterpiece, I would say King Crimson's Red. It's a tough call though, there's lots of excellent music on that list.

can you explain what album of Ash Ra Tempel is called "Same"? Wink

the "dark" meaning is pretty much voiled.

and as I am welcome to disagree on your inclusions, thank you for that LOL, I saw Animals' not dark, Pawn Hearts' not darkest of VdGG, A Passion Play isn't dark, 666's not dark, In Camera's not dark enough. Wink

I don't know what to vote. Cry

Tie between "Ys" and "First Utterance", as far as I'm concerned. I voted for the latter, though, which I found really disturbing - and musically quite wonderful as well.

There is a lot of different kinds of darkness and expressions on this list. If you have another dark favorite, please write which one. Some of you might miss Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant, ELP, Rush but I just find them too sunny and lighthearted compared to most of these. You're also welcome to disagree on my inclusions.

Which album do you consider 70's prog's dark masterpiece?
Over land and under ashes
In the sunlight, see - it flashes
Find a fly and eat his eye
But don't believe in me
Don't believe in me
Don't believe in me
