It's worth reading (for Tolkien fans) and isn't that long, but like I said, pretty much the whole story is a downer.
I remembered the ending from The Silmarillion, but I completely forgot the names, the only story that I remember well is Beren and Luthien.

Go ahead and read it, the first part is hard for me to read because Tolkien introduces so many different characters that it is hard for me to keep them straight, but for the most part it is essential if you liked The Hobbit/The Lord of the Rings.
