I don't find swears offensive.  In fact, they can be helpful in accentuating a point.
That said, we are members here. We do not own the server, the software or the Internet connection the web site uses.
There are reasons a web host may not want language like that on the site.
First and foremost is accessability.  There are plent of places that use net-nannies and the like that block web sites.
A lot of these are libraries, where some people without Internet can go to get online.
Whether the operators of these facilities are right or wrong is not the issue.  However, I think we want as many people as possible to be able to get to the site.
There is no reason that we members, discussing music and whatever, have to swear to make a point.

Oh, and f**k.
Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

That's pretty much another way of saying that it's pointless. So, why can't it just be done away with?

That's sort-of the whole point - those replacement words get old very quickly, but so do the words they replace. While through overuse we are inured to hearing swearing most of the time in our daily lives to the extend that we neither hear it or even notice we are using it, its constant repetition in print is just tiresome on the eyes.

They changed the name Dick, for the word Thingy, so when I wrote about Iron Maiden, the post read "Bruce Thingyson" LOL

Well, that's been fixed now and you don't need to use any tricks to get around it. So if you could remove the *trick* from your post so that it does not encourage the weak-willed and easily led to copy you that would be lovely.

I was just thinking about that myself.  Whatever happened to that idea?  I suggest using Evolver's Spock for the f word.  "Spock you", "Go Spock yourself", "God, I need to get Spocked tonight", "Spocking A", etc.  LOL
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

Ah, yeah, I see how it works now. I'm just glad it didn't apply retroactively...Although I kind of wanted to be a PA celebrity. ;-)

II understand what you are saying, but context and how the word is used is all important on words that have multiple meanings - the auto-censor is too dumb to know context, which is why we have such fun with pocketwatch and the like. I would not like to see Miles Davis censored to B*tches Brew, but anyone who uses bitch or bitchslap on the forum should be extremely careful in how they use it since with or without censorship, it can still be offensive and will be taken as such..

LOL Ah I see - no, that wasn't me this time. Now the giggle has passed, I've removed it.

/edit - and no, the original isn't retained on the server - the autocensor replaces on input, which is why is flicks up URLs.

Yeah, that's really annoying and you shouldn't do it. I am opposed to word filters of any kind, although I understand why PA has it and why it won't change. It is too bad Dean's thread derailed because I think that would have been a better solution for the stance the administration takes, although it would also make me unable to swear at all without breaking the rules. :(

I disagree with all kinds of censorship bar one. Unfortunately the "bar one" cannot be relied upon, and that is self-censorship, because people are not very good at it.

I remember that thread. I thought it was a good idea and I actually did that on my forum for a while as a result, except with normal words, just to screw with ppl.
