As to what I'm accusing; absolutely. I think it's obvious that this is an inspiration-less song ripped straight off of Waters and Gilmours' backs. Wilson hasn't done something this blatant since 'Sky Moves Sideways'.

I'm a huge Porcupine Tree fan, and I care about the band's originality. I'm not just trying to slam them without cause. I will still by the album and all; I just hope the rest of the tracks are much more unique.

I don't think The Sky Moves Sideways is copying anything from Floyd whatsoever, nor do I think so for Time Flies. It's incidental that things sound somewhat similar. (Time Flies sounds nothing like Dogs to me by the way, neither in the lyrics or music, and only somewhat reminds me of Sheep but the similarity is nothing but incidental).

I've always been irritated by comparisons to Floyd, mainly because I think The Sky Moves Sideways and Up the Downstair have all the spacey elements of classic Floyd, but do everything better to my ears. Nothing Pink Floyd ever did as an album pleases me as much as The Sky Moves Sideways.

Really?

I think it would've done amazingly on IN ABSENTIA, but then again, that is one of the few nearly perfect albums.

Great stuff - Listening again now

Just uses a similar strumming pattern on the accoustic- not similar chords or progression, though

OK.......( no more no less )

Hard to judge from those small cuts. Time Flies is not bad.

I still prefer the Vaya Con Dios version though LOL

Again, why do people think this is news to me? I'm very well aware of the Floyd comparisons, I've been here a while. I'm just pointing out the obvious in this particular track's case.

Porcupine Tree hasn't sounded like Pink Floyd in years, and for them to go back to that place again seems kind of regressive. That's all I'm pointing out.

I know this is not news to you, I was simply stating the point. I agree that the comparison is obvious, it's pretty hard not to notice.

I'm not so sure that it is a regression for PT to sound like PF, however I would have thought that if PT were to release another blatant TSMS, then sure.  But I still beleive that it is too early to tell just from the single.

No, I'm still hopeful. Remember how we were both freaking out at the demo? LOL So I'm definately still looking forward to this. I even like this song fine, but I just got sad when I heard the utter lack of individuality. Cry

I'm sure the rest of the album will be better, though. I haven't known PT to sound like that for an entire album's length. And let's not forget the main suite, which I'm sure will be full of surprises. Smile

Sorry if I came off as a bit grouchy. It's past my bed time LOL

As a massive PT fan(boy) myself, I know what you mean, but I just feel that there are worse things that Steven Wilson could have done that take one of the best prog albums of all time (< that comment now protected by anti-flame suit) and base it for the single for his next album.

Anyway, it's still a charming song.

I've listened to it a few times more and I am liking it better than I did initially.

And yes, "Animals" is one of the greatest Prog albums of all time in my book as well. Wink

p.s. Besides, I'm sure I have and will continue to 'rip-off' a few of my favorite artists as well in my day. I'm not all that concerned about it.

I remember when I first heard the medley back in the original album thread, Time Flies sounded very Animals era Floyd. This isn't really a bad thing by any means, but it it obviously the overriding influence in the track.

Oh yeah, and PT have been considered Floyd clones before.

(UTD, TSMS, Signify etc) Cool

Yeah, the chorus is from 'Sheep', and the verses are from 'Dogs'.

'And after a while . . . '

'You've got to . . . '

to me seem like clear rip-offs lyrically, as well as musically. Confused

If you're just now accusing PT of shamelessly copying Pink Floyd, that bandwagon seemed to pass about 15 years ago. Wink

I like what I'm hearing so far of the song, and I can see the comparison to Animals, especially right at the intro for me.
