My biggest issue is trying to find some titles and find they are out of print or they are asking an exorbitant price for them. Would be nice if they would just offer flac downloads or if there was a way to share some of these titles that are out of print legally...

I have no major gripes, especially with the ability to use filters. So, if there's a sub-genre you don't like or don't think is Prog, or whatever, just filter it out! Easy enough to do. The filters are also good for seeing what lesser-known bands are getting good ratings--with the default settings, they tend to get bumped out by better know albums/bands. The Maximum Number of Ratings setting is especially useful for finding great music that is less-well known. I've been setting it to 100 to find some excellent bands (try it if you haven't--see what comes up). I also recently tried 50, and saw that I hadn't heard most of the music! You can also filter by country, which has been useful for me, as I'm planning some radio programs (as a DJ) that highlight the best Prog from various regions (Latin America, France, Eastern Europe, etc.) So, anyway, I use the filters for researching lesser know music, and encourage the same for others on this site. |

Interesting, I told that astronomy astrology anecdote in the boxes thread without looking at this topic which relates to the same thing. It's like the stars aligned or something. Excuse me if I repeat it here:
[Regarding Psychics and Psychologists] l'm reminded of a story I heard on the radio relayed by an astronomer. This anecdote is to the best of my recollection with some embellishment, no doubt. He was at some sort of function and was approached by a seemingly wealthy Texan. The Texan asked, "What do you do? I'm in oil." The astronomer replied, "I'm the Astronomer Royal". The Texan replied, "Really, wow, so you tell the Queen her fortune? That's fascinating. Hey, got any predictions for me?" The astronomer replied, "Oil prices will continue to fluctuate over time". The Texan looked unimpressed. Feeling awkward, the astronomer said, "You might have misheard me, I'm the Astronomer Royal, not the Astrologer Royal, but we also make predictions... using astronomical data". "Oh, "said the Texan, "All right then", and walked off. I wondered if the Texan was joking and the astronomer didn't get the joke, or, well, I could see that being an easy mistake to make, especially in a crowded room. Royal Astrologer does have a historical ring to it. Edited by Logan - February 27 2020 at 15:14 |

Hi, You're the one confused ... astrology has not a whole lot of astronomy, specially when the position of the planets are not even correct! However, like everything else, many folks can find meanings in everything ... including your tea leaves and trash!

At last, a mind applying reason, logic and everyday common sense, thank you FZ. If a label can mean various things to various people, and isn't accepted by everyone as correct, then it isn't a label, hell, it isn't even an accepted working term. |

Correct and I agree completely. That's been my entire point every post in this thread. It's all subjective, so why are people trying to argue there's a standard...then betray their own logic saying there isn't? That's all I'm seeing in this thread = "It's prog!" "It's not prog!" "Well, prog is actually a loose definition..." All of these are indirectly proving there is no one definition, and thus it will always be subjective regardless of our best effort to assign labels.
Correct, but people forget this is a two way street. Dancing around in ambiguity/subjectivity while asserting prog rock is a set term in the first place is the same problem from a different angle. There are clearly two sides of the prog fence on PA. What I'm seeing is pseudo-intellectual people on PA getting pissed that actual intellectuals aren't putting up with irrational claims, doubling-down, then moving the goal posts when cornered (not saying you're doing this). |

Hi, Now you know why there isn't enough respect for the "pop music" culture ... go ahead ... snort your sound effects. It's just an attempt to raise the quality and the respect of a lot of music, and I think that progressive music, should be treated with more respect, than your "connoseurs" of anything. Btw ... it's not about the "sheet of music", what I wrote ... mostly you should know what a lot of paper is used for! |

It is because they STRONGLY identify with what they like and they have the unconscious need to promote it and compare and rate and say it is better than X and Y in order to improve their self-esteem.
