^^ that keyboard player, Ryo Okunomo is the album for me. His playing on Snow rivals that of Michael Pinella's for Symphony X's V:Mythology. Perfect sounds. :)
Today's line up of fun for the tail end of a long weekend for me.
APP-- Ammonia Avenue. ( so underrated. Some of the best songs APP ever did exist on this disc. ) Prince-- Batman (motion picture soundtrack. 1989) Eden House-- Bad Men Serj Tankian-- Elect the dead ( live with the Berlin philharmonic orchestra.) APP-- Eve ( Lucifer is so badass! The beginning even has a morse code that spells E.V.E. ;)

A bit like the Riverside album I played next, although it has less prog-outs I had to see which track was that, it's really great
Curiously I bought that one and The Incident on the same purchase, more filler than anything else

Yep, perfect background listen because of the shorter melodic tunes, but then it drops in some top-notch prog-outs! Heh, there's a track just near the end of the first disc called `Solitary Soul' where Neal's singing in this falsetto and this orchestra rises up behind him near the end, and I swear it's cheesy as hell but it makes me break down like a little girl! I find the lyrics very touching and genuine, very comforting and embracing. Yeah, that self-titled album is great at the start and the end, but it comes to a complete halt in the very middle. Definitely the curse of the `Spock's Beard Filler' strikes again!

^ I've been listening to it on background, it's very enjoyable this way. I don't think I could sit through the whole album. It still seems much shorter than the self-titled album, despite being almost 40 minutes longer

I really enjoy that album, Sam. Sure it's too long and seems to run out of steam towards the end of the second disc, but damn the melodies and harmonies are constantly strong throughout. In many ways it's more commercial and straight-forward than their previous discs, but there are a lot of stand-out spots. I honestly believe at that exact moment Spock's had the perfectly opportunity to get some FM radio play with several potential singles off that album, but Neal was out the door as soon as it was released. It's not hard to see his `religious awakening' on that album either, the whole thing is a Christ-metaphor and is loaded with Christian lyrics, just more obviously than the previous albums!

I hope (I bet?) you loved that one, Dave? I think fans of the early Soft Machine albums would go mental for it |
Yep. I have well and truly fallen for this album. Robert Wyatt-like vocals and some delicious Dave Sinclairian organ runs. What's not to like? May not score high on the originalometer but damn it's good! The Winstons along with Magic Bus (UK) and another Italiano act Homunculus Res seem to be the modern purveyors of Canterbury, and I for one am revelling in the sounds from yesteryear.

Just listened to the first 20 minutes, man this is really good! I think I saw that name before but never went for it. I'll check it out again and probably get it soon, where did you buy it from? |
I got it from Syn-Phonic in the States, mate, no idea if it's hard to track down elsewhere. Definitely try to give that whole clip a spin, it's a pretty strange album with some pretty straight-forward rock/protest pieces mixed in between the really loopy stuff! So you might love half of it and hate the rest! But I'll post a review for it later on tonight anyway, I think it's a great little album, plenty of great playing on it

Funny you've mentioned this band, I only found out about them a few hours ago. They are about to play in Israel next month to open for the amazing Tatran, I immediately bought a ticket to see Tatran so I'll be seeing them too that same evening. I need to check them out but how's the music anyway? |
It was almost surprisingly good! Really rad blend of fusion, 60s post-bop, hip hop, and contemporary jazz. Tight, short songs with as much emphasis on the songs as there is the soloing.
