I might be wrong, but I always thought that this whole institution of asking for and handing out signatures only helps to maintain the shameful cult of idolatry that turns artists into entertainers and public servants and the audience into a mindless bunch of materialist collectors.

Some artists sell CDs pre-signed though.  I got a copy Phil Manzanera's debut and Queit Sun's Mainstream signed by Phil himself.  Awesome.
