I have yet to check out AKA Moon but I guess you just sealed the deal for me. I gather you dig Furio Chirico (Arti e Mestieri) if you're into busy drummers?  Makes Cobham look like Meg White.

Interesting description! I really like Ivan Fedotov's drumming, but I'm a sucker for a "busy" drummer. Along with Stephane Galland (AKA Moon) and Kenny Grohowski, one of my favourites on the current scene.

The production is rather relentless for a psych album, but I feel the erratic drumming from Ivan Fedotov rather makes up for it with his lovable spastic twitches. Funny you should mention that about The Winstons - I feel like I should take it easy as well and not OD on it straight away. Brilliant album though with just he right amount of old school warmth - particularly felt in the production vibe.

How do you feel about that Vespero album? It's my personal fave from them - and especially those last three pieces send me over the moon and into the stratosphear 
Me yesterday: Magazine - Secondhand Daylight (Post punk classic with loads of keys and organs normally only found in Pork Rogue) The Winstons - s/t (Wyatt era Softs team up with David Sinclair on organ) Aluk Todolo - Voix (Not as good as Occult Rock but still rather tasty) Nicklas Sørensen - Solo (Papir guitarist cools down with a laidback shimmering release) Matmos - Ultimate Care ll (An entire album comprised of sounds a washing machine makes!...and it works) John Carpenter - Lost Themes ll (Even better than the real thing...erm...than volume 1) The Gourishankar - The World Unreal (Disappointment of the year  ...and I was so looking forward to this. Seems far too "computery" and flat to these ears)

Hmmm, I'm really back and forth with that one, Sam! I totally understand what you're saying and completely agree, then the next listen I think it's absolute psychedelic perfection! I found it very hard to get into at first. I thought it too slow and uneventful, but I gather that's down to me only having heard Force Majeure and Stratosfear previously to the experience. I think the penny dropped while lying outside my folks' house - just chilling in the grass watching bumblebees flutter about. It suddenly started making sense and it hasn't stopped since. Certainly not an album for house guests and family get-togethers but surely something I put on late at night just to take a closer look at Jupiter and the milky way without the need of a telescope.

I'm Cheating a bit, albums I listened to the past 3-4 days, but Hey I meant to get on each day and didn't get around to it. I'm on a kick of listenting to several albums for the first time (with first impressions).....
To The Highest Bidder - Supersister (What a great album!)
4 Visions -- Eskaton (nice to hear some really good non-Magma Zeuhl)
Light and Heavy--The Best of Iron Butterfly (S'ok)
Hosianna Mantra - Popul Vuh (much lighter that expected, but still good)
Journey in Satchidananda -- Alice Coltrane (love the Indian/Jazz mix)
Arbeit Macht Frei -- Area (2nd listen, superb! but for some strange reason liked it better the first)
Mice and Rats in the Loft -- Jan Dukes De Grey (yep, liked this one)
Ave Sangria -- Ave Sangria (a bit hard for me to get into)
Depois Do Fim -- Bacamarte (sure I'll be listenting to this again soon!)
Good God -- Good God (didn't hear anything special, but good album)
Children -- Iluvatar (a couple great songs, the rest seemed so-so)
Stadacone -- Sloche (only part)
Over-Nite Sensation -- Frank Zappa (well, 2nd listen: kinda silly)
and ones I've heard:
Dedalus -- Dedalus
Bolling: Suite No. 2 for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio -- (not rock, but "progressive" in its own way with mix of classical/jazz)

Apparently there's also a 90's English remake, which I really have no interest in hearing, it's great just as it is this way!
Although you won't hear it at the start so much, there's a very strong Gentle Giant-influence throughout a lot of the album. But there's more to the band than being a simple clone band, and there's even quite an RPI-sound to little moments here and there, but especially on the final track (which could have easily fit on any RPI album if it had been sung in Italian!). It's a really nice album, I'm very happy to own it.
I'm kind of stalled with a slight writers block on wrapping up my review of it, but hopefully I'll get through it soon!  |
Yeah, it doesn't have much GG at the beginning, it has some Symphonic and Fusion elements. Nice album, not a clone really
