I like the piano based melodies, but it's just simple pop music, nice to hear on the radio, but nothing to listen to for a complete album.

Could you give me some examples of Coldplay ripping off Radiohead?

Maybe something amazing happened after I fell asleep, then.

I think the gist is that Colplay is not for 14 year old school girls ... you seem to be an exception. I think that 90% of the current 14 year old schoolgirls would describe Coldplay as "boring", or "lame", or "too old".

Yea, I would agree with you there. They'd much prefer to listen to IMo, Hip hop or Rap?

The truth is that I ADORE Coldplay. If it wasn't for Chris Martins romantic lyrics and emotionally driven voice then I'd probably have killed myself while having to go to such a tasteless hell-hole of a school and living in such a community. (sorry to be overly-dramatic)
YET... Coldplay may have good guitar riffs and chordal progression and a lovely sleepy-voiced leader but that's as far as the similarities with Radiohead go. I love Radiohead (who are a little bit darker in their themes and experimental than CP) too but *neither* are prog! Just because something is fantastic doesn't mean it's in the prog-rock style. Someone on these forums said that there's a difference between being 'progressive' and being in the 'Progressive' Rock genre...and they were absolutely right. Don't get me wrong- some of Radiohead's songs certainly sound like progressive rock (eg: Paranoid Android is unmistakably one) but Thom yorke has really confessed to disliking the idea of Progessive Rock as a genre all together. Coldplay and Radiohead are BRIT POP! There's really no two ways about it.
But I can see why you'rd question the possibilities when after listening to Genesis' Carpet Crawlers then Coldplay's Sparks, you could almost call then one-in-the-same.
*Starette wacks Spectral over the head with a baton several times till his brain starts to show then rolls him up in a carpet and throws him to the lions but not before giving him a hefty does of heroin* You may not have noticed Spectral but in all the times I've seen you on this site, i appear to have developed a rather large dislike of you and your petty short-sited viewpoints.
My ex-bf is into SOAD. God help him. I wouldn't recommend that type of crap to anyone unless they're just looking for beer-drinking songs or something to get high to.

How is that relevant here? Borealis has made no mention of 13 yrs old kids in regard to coldplay?

Coldplay and SOAD have in common that they are not bands for kids. So, both comments have in common that they don't reflect the situation in the real world.
Not every band that makes video clips and is played on MTV is for kids.

They grow on me with each single and each album. They're not bad. I like their lyrics and their compositions, although simple are polished and rich in melody.
Someone said they were a band for 14 year old girls, but to be honest I'm not aware of anyone under 28 or so, liking them. They seem to be the sort of band that lovey dovey middle class couples go and see together; or a token guitar band for people who dont normally listern to guitar based music.
They're one of the better mainstream acts around at the moment, but they have no place here IMO..

It is obtuse to consider Coldplay prog, let alone a good band. They are nothing like Radiohead.
Coldplay are a dull, drab, whining little band. The
vocals are dreadful and the music totally uninteresting. They are
a success because of the marketing machine. If people delved
deeper they would find a whole host of bands who do the "coldplay"
thing a thousand times better. Check out The Gloria Record for
instance.
If we, prog listeners, just accepted what was thrown at us by the
marketeers of the major labels we would all be listening to cr*p and
wouldn't have discovered the really interesting music this genre has to
offer. So why do this with mainstream pop?
