If we're going to revivify the thread with some new bands, let's also have the wonderful Birthday Ass and their new album Head of the Household:

Proper avant-rock from Brooklyn. Piss off your family, friends and neighbours! They got it coming.

This is probably of interest to some here, visceral experimental doom jazz, AKU!, from Scotland and fronted by Greg Costello

I'm sound interesting. I'll definitely pick it up at some point.

I figured this ought to be of interest to whoever still follows this thread: This week Cuneiform released a recording by The Fourth World Quartet, starring Roger Miller of Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic and his brothers in the mid-70s performing a very woodwind-heavy, dissonant, experimental RIO-type sound.

Well hopefully it will be a far corner situation (wait like 6 years but still delivers). I assume the pandemic hasn't help in those efforts either.

Sorry to say I haven't heard more but there's still loads of great stuff to explore out there.

A bump:

Trying to drown myself in nostalgia for a host of personal reasons, I've recently gone back through the two drop in center threads over the past week or so. It's been fun, giving me a bunch of reminders of bands and albums I've long forgotten about or missed the first time around due to lack of availability. Good to see posts by people that haven't been around here in forever (Assaf, Adam, Claire, Chris, and David especially), although it adds a hint of sadness that they've moved on from the site.

Hopefully people out there are still enjoying the weird world of RIO/Avant and this thread can get some life breathed back into it. Seemingly bad days on these fronts though...with Altrock stopping, cunieform focusing mostly on jazz these days, and Soliel Zeuhl proceeding very slowly. But I guess that's just the state of affairs for the modern recording industry.

Along those lines, another thing I thought of when browsing the threads, is that the late 90s and early to mid 2000s was probably the best time to be a fan of this type of music. Lots of bands and ensembles (even if they only existed briefly), physical media (read CDs) was still in fashion, there were avenues to explore to get noticed/signed/distributed, and the internet blossomed so you could find places to buy these ever obscure treasures. Some sadness also flowed in realizing I missed that sweet spot by like half a dozen years. But so it goes.

Hope all the frequent visitors to these threads are alive and well given these weird times.

It's funny that on the second post on the first page on here someone mentioned Magma. Lol. I guess nobody knew what Zeuhl was way back in 2008. Lol.

HELLO PANHEAD

This is out now and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Absolutely awesome and epic. Spiritual jazz meets drone metal in a zone of heavily spaced-out raga rock and blackened psychedelia. Pupmeister, this has got your name written all over it!

Also, it's a concept album about how after the end of the anthropocene era mankind will be replaced as Earth's hegemonic species by a gargantuan race of intelligent elephants. And it's from Belgium. Really, what the f**k more do you want?
Listening to it for the first time right now, and it sounds awesome. Great mix of psychedelic stoner metal with all kinds of influences, it's all over the place. I gotta split it to 2 though since it's over 2 hours.
