Yeah, I'd heard Polygondwanaland a couple times already, I listened to Sketches while working today but it didn't grab me as instantly as Murder, will have to give it another spin later when I have more attention. Listening to Major Parkinson now, should be no surprise I love it even though I kind of long for their sound back in the days of the Solitary Home - but I feel like pining for that album is a little ironic. Their music definitely has more depth now, just less humour to it, I miss that about their older stuff. I know nothing about Vespero but I've queued up that album for next based on the album art alone. Gotta love these streaming services that let you try things out very easily.

I checked it out - excellent! Clean Feed is a really good label. In similar vein (and continuing my obsession with Finland) there are a couple of albums by the Markus Pesonen Hendectet that you might fancy, Hum and Padme. Though they are not from 2017.

I trust you've got the new one as well? If not then feel free to drop by bandcamp. It's free http://kinggizzard.bandcamp.com/album/polygondwanaland
Another one I'm looking forward to is Vespero's Shum-Shir. It certainly is one of the most beautiful album covers of the year imo: ![]() Damn thing is huge!!!! The only pic I could find though

"Charlie Cawood's exquisite The Divine Abstract "
I've listened to the Earth's Answer and Fearful Symmetry, solid melodic material, kinda reminiscent of Gryphon but with a more folk edge.

Hi Gaz!
We have a few Gizzard fans on PA, including myself, and you're absolutely right; they've had a terrific year. I prefer Sketches myself. I think it is a fresh breath of air in their discography. |

Not sure if it's been mentioned here, but King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are having a great year, four releases so far of which I've heard 3 and all are pretty good. "Murder of the Universe" in particular stands out to me and has a lot of prog leanings (3 long suites of songs each with a thematic concept / story it tells).

As usual, at the end of the year it is hard to keep track of everything that has been released, and looking at people's lists you realize that you have missed a lot of great stuff. In my view, this year started out really slowly in terms of new interesting releases, then it slowly but steadily gained momentum. One of my Top 5 favourite albums = Charlie Cawood's exquisite The Divine Abstract - was released in late October. You can listen to it on the Bad Elephant Music Bandcamp page. Charlie plays bass with Knifeworld (among others), and is an extremely talented individual. If you haven't heard the album, give it a listen - or two, or more. Sheer beauty!

Glad to be of service mate. Looks like you're already paying me back as I am wildly interested in all three of those - in particular the one with Torstein Lofthus. Man I am a sucker for his playing!
Also in the jazzy realm though served up with what sounds like the bass antics of Magma and a little bit of funk and Kamasi Washington: |

I recently picked up three 2017 albums that are really kicking my arse:
Mumpbeak - Tooth. Keyboard power trio playing heavy avant jazz prog. Roy Powell mainly on snarling distorted Clavinet (played through guitar effects pedals), Lorenzo Feliciato on electric bass, Torstein Lofthus going nuts on the drumkit. Reflections In Cosmo - s/t. Kjetil Moster (saxes), Snah (guitars), Stale Storlokken (keys), Thomas Stronen (drums) - so, a proper supergroup, then. Like you would expect with these names this is a Crab Nebula of freeform interstellar heaviosity. Bobby Previte - Mass. Gregorian plainsong goes head to head with vicious sawtooth guitar riffs (courtesy of Stephen O'Malley, Jamie Saft and others) whilst the cathedral organ wails and Previte’s bombastic tribal drums kick everything into overdrive. All on RareNoise who seem to be having a vintage year. Edited by Mascodagama - November 23 2017 at 12:39 |

This sounds just up my alley, thanks David. I do love a post-modern big band. Or just one that is really silly. |

I know I've recommended this album before but Angles 9's Disappeared Behind The Sun is the real deal if you're into the experimental big band sound. Jazz for a slightly bonkers outlook on life. Adds that little bit of elephant-in-a-skirt to the mix.

The new Ariel Pink and John Maus albums are brilliant. Maybe not prog but damn deliciously wonky music that pays tribute to the 60s and the 80s simultaneously whilst sounding oddly contemporary in the process.
New Com Truise is also really good. So nice to be thrown back into the synth sounds of every 80s Tom Cruise action movie...again whilst sounding oddly contemporary. Talkbead Fou! Jack Umbria's Luciferian Towers has been winning me over slowly. Didn't think much of it the first time I span it. Defo a grower. |
