Love King Crimson name but went for Van der Graaf Generator - there is something iconic and dark about that name

This in spades. It rolls off of your tongue so elegantly like the very thing it portrays - a tangerine coloured dream. Beautiful.

From this list I chose King Crimson. I mean, the name just sounds awesome. VdGG gets second place. I have always loved "Zappa" as well. Zappa just sounds so cool, and it's just a last name.

King Crimson surely! And not just because they are my long-time favorites, but mostly because that name is so noble, symbolic, iconic... some nagger would say even pompous.
"Pink Floyd" sounds pretty. But I don't care about some old Blues men, I actually don't like the Blues (with a few exceptions).
"Van der Graaf Generator"? Too long and little pretentious name, apparently it's assumed that you are a bit familiar with physics.
"Gentle Giant" is a genial idea using the two G's, the name evokes something very big, but also friendly and gracious. Just like their music.
"Tangerine Dream"? It sounds also pretty, but honestly, it seems like a joke. Who ever had a dream about tangerine? Perhaps on the trip. And maybe it's about...

Pink Floyd sounds like the name for a refrigerator which someone painted pink for some reason. The name Gentle evokes an image of a guy who use to be in the gang I used to hang around with in my late teens; he was seven feet lall and had the built of a heavy weight wrestler, but would usually not have hurt a fly (unless you really provoked him). So it is a toss between King Crimson and Van der Graaf Generator. I'll go with the latter.

They're all good names, but Pink Floyd made me wonder a bit about the meaning when I still didn't know that were the names of two bluesmen.

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution
