Pointless comparison, I agree, but I have to admit I've never seen all the fuss about Zappa's guitar playing. I rate him much higher as a COMPOSER than I do as a musician.

Bad comparison.

I agree that Zappa blows away most other guitarists.

To me, it is that his solos are interesting, and are, at least the released instances, actually the compositions of the moment that Zappa was striving to achieve. His solos don't feel like traditional solos, they feel like an additional movement of the piece, not just linking devices or intrumental bridges.

There are obviously other examples of guitarists who have done this, but Zappa's work always seems to me to be the least 'safe', in so far as non-jazz pieces are concerned.

Just my opinion....

Petrucci is a "shredder", very technical in "sweeping" but that's all. He is a good metal guitarist but Zappa is by fare more talented, moreover he get the soul and have a stRong feeling that Petrucci dosen't have.

You're like comparing Chuck Berry and Snoop Dog.

Are you delirious? Your post is absolutely senseless!

You are comparring two different worlds, it's something completely different!

Jimi Hendrix? He was the first, he reinvented the electric guitar but everyone nowaday (Petrucci, Vai, Morse...etc..) is tecnically much better than JH!

...so Zappa was a music genius, but for what concern guitar tecnique he was'nt able to do a solo like modern prog guitarists, that's the fact! He was an old school guitarist, and of course a musical genius!!!

And John Petrucci is probably the most unique guitarist in prog metal scene he is really unique and personal!

Petrucci has an extremely recognizable style.  A few weeks ago, someone posted a clip of an unrecognized song, and I'd never heard it either, but after listening to it, I realized it was Petrucci's playing, so some research led to me realizing it was from his brand new solo album.  So you're wrong on THAT count.

However, Zappa *does* blow him and many others away.  Way to be ignorant about metal guitarists, though, many of them have very unique styles.  Douche.

Zappa blows away most rock guitarists. Period!

I can take or leave a lot of his music, but as an inovator and a musical p!ss taker he wears the crown.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Are you saying no one could distinguish Petrucci from say Chuck Shuldiner (RIP)? Or Van Halen? Or Jarzombek? Or whichever of Jason Gobel/Paul Masvida did more guitars in Cynic? That's absurd.

Not blasting anyone? Yet of ALL the guitarists in the prog world you had to pick John Petrucci.

i bet not one can distinguish petrucci from any other highly skilled METAL(yeah, i said it) guitarist out there.

zappa on the other hand, was flambouyant and virtuosic to no extent, and was undeniably the most musically talented, somewhat mainstream, prog musician ever (or of those that ive heard)

he was even better than hendrix.

(im not blasting anyone in particular, just sharing thoughts)
