I don't really like too many keyboardists, but Derek Sherinian would have to win for me, and for drummers, not prog, but Flo Mounier. He's unnatuarlly good.

nice list.. in fact damn near exactly what I would put.. you nailed the drummers.. and were pretty close on the keyboardists... two I would change not a fan of the group.. but give the man his due. that Ratridge dude from Soft Machine in the 3 spot.. as much as love Leone... would take Toni Pagliuca from Orme. Bigger body of work.. and his work on Felona e Sorona is just as impressive as YS.. just obviously a different flavor.

Vangelis can play some mean keys and hammer on the drums. He gets my vote as keyboard/drummer.

Thank you for saying Andy Ward and Peter Bardens Cesar. I was about to. And don't dis Rick Wright too much everybody. He may not be the most talented, but he and Gilmour are the two that really gave Floyd their sound musically. This whole poll's kinda screwed up. Is there really a "best"? It's all a matter of opinion. If you put most of these guys up against each other, they'd probably come out even is a far as talent and technical prowess goes.

Huh? John Paul Jones primary instrument was the bass dude. He played keyboards with one finger.
I choose OTHER (Rick Wakeman by a hair over Tony Banks, and Bill Bruford)
edit---wow, I just realized that someone decided to resurrect this 3 year old thread. Never mind. Half of the people here weren't even born then.

Jarle Vespestad is an amazing drummer, especially his work with Farmer's Market which is absolutely stunning!
For all time favorite drummers, I'd say Mark Zonder, Phil Collins, Bill Bruford, Pierre Moerlen and Daniel Denis have certainly influenced me a lot.
As for keyboardists, Keith Emerson and Kerry Minnear are particular faves. Theres many others too though, I just can't name them all.

Pierre Moerlen was an excellent keyboarder too, by the way; he was a classically trained piano player before he took up drumming. The following anecdote about him (taken from the Gong homepage) shows that: Jonny Greene I first met Pierre in 1990 when he came to stay at the
house I shared with Daevid in Somerset. The three of us went out to eat
at a local café, The Blue Note, which as it's name implies often had
live music in the evenings. Two very good local jazz musicians, John
Cartwright & Jackie Whitren were playing, and as a happy Pierre got
into what they were doing he started to play along using just his hands
on the table top. In fact he got so into it that after a while, on the
appreciative nod of John Cartwright at the electric piano, he even took
a solo. And when he came to the end of the solo the whole, full café,
who had no idea who he was, burst into loud, prolonged spontaneous
applause - he'd been that good! He was always that good. I'll remember
him and the times we had on tour with much fondness.
