"cause its time, its time in time With your time and its news is captured For the queen to use. Move me on to any black square, Use me any time you want, Just remember that the gold sfor us to capture all we want, anywhere,"
Not that I understand it very much, but it's definitely my favorite phrase Jon ever sung.

My favorite is probably:
From the moment I reached out to hold, I felt a sound
And what touches our soul slowly moves as touch rebounds
And to know that tempo will continue
Lost in trance of dances as rhythm takes another turn
As is my want, I only reach to look in your eyes
But I've got many favorites. Which is surprising. |
Great one. When you think about it, the lyrics had to deliver at that point. Everything that had gone before it in the band, the mad dashes of solo guitar romantically winding into this low energy section yet with these thick chords, it demands great lyrics; and these even speak to picking up the song again, taking up the dance again, which is what happens!

For some non-Anderson lyrics that I love there's this part of Machine Messiah
Cables that carry the life to the cities we build
Threads that link diamonds of life to the satanic mills
Ah, to see in every way
That we feel it every
Day, and know that
Maybe we'll change
Offered the chance
To finally unlearn our lessons and alter our stance. And, if I may, Machine, Machine Messiah
The mindless
Search for a higher Controller
Take me to the fire
And hold me
Show me the strength of your singular ... Eye.

Jon Anderson's favorite verbs: attain, retain.
His favorite adverbs: surely, rightly.

I can't remember exactly, and so I may be wrong, but I think I remember hearing Anderson say that it had something to do with religion or the search for truth, but he was non-committal. And since I feel like I remember him "saying" it, it was probably from some live bootleg.

Turn of the Century wins my vote as well.

Many of Jon's lyrics appear incredibly cheesy without the music, but these lines I find brilliant:
Crossed the line around the changes of the summer Reaching out to call the color of the sky Passed around a moment clothed in mornings faster than we see

The only section that springs to mind as a perfect marriage between the moody passages of the classical guitar and jon's lyrics is:
Where does reason stop and killing just take over Does a lamb cry out before we shoot it dead Are there many more in comfort understanding Is the movement in the head
It never fails to move me, especially that lamb bit. So call me a romantic...

Sing fortune all to order, battle-scarred to rebel's window And faithful axe remind you And faithful axe remind you Now kindred, place your fallow mark upon the ocean's play And faithful axe remind you And faithful axe remind you Then clearly stay all glorious and mete wonder And clearly for the motion set in play Keep somber as the air relieves us train remind Chut chut Chut chut chut
Speak kindly and of fusion tame the wind delights akimbo And faithful axe remind you And faithful axe remind you And timely is the breadth all fortune comes to mind our way And faithful axe remind you And faithful axe remind you Then clearly they repeat a flower's thunder (in her white lace) Then clearly they regard the shadow clay And shine creation memory caressing time

"Owner of a lonely heart, much better than the owner of a broken heart."
Say what you will about the song and the album but them there are wise words.

In her white lace, You could clearly see the lady sadly looking, Saying that she'd take the blame For the crucifixion of her own domain. The refrain of the following line though will usually make a non-fan laugh. But hey man, it was the early 70's man.
