^ they should be seperate entries, as far as I know all of Fripp's various projects have their own entry, no stress, just get it when you can.

I think we're going to go down this road. My knowledge of Zorn is next to nothing but this just seems to make sense. |

The print on the insert for the CD is so small you need a magnifiying glass to read details of the line-up, however, the web provides (see track 4 listing below) and shows my memory ain't that faulty:

Jaco Pastorius with Material? I doubt this, but I will check this anyway.
About P.I.L.'s "Compact" (or "Album", or "Cassette" - depends on the format!), I wonder if it hadn't some bad reviews for a long time. Bad reviews in a "weird" way: it seems that people complain about the professionalism of this record! |

One of our local secondhand record shops filed a big section of Laswell's recordings under 'Dance' or 'Turntablism' - the latter tag will be a first here
![]() Anybody mentioned the excellent and fascinating job he did marrying Johnny 'Rotten' Lyden with Steve Vai, Ginger Baker, Tony Williams etal. on PIL's Compact - the epitomy of 80's progressive music. Also curious about the amount of reciprocation between Laswell and Jonas Hellborg (also on one track of Compact) at the end of the 80's? BTW does one of those 80's Material albums have both Jaco Pastorius and Paul Butterfield together on perhaps their last recordings?

^ Sounds like someone needs to do a little house cleaning on the Zorn discography, including making some extra band entries for some of the records etc.

...not trying to rabble-rouse or anything, but I'm just curious as to why this same measure hasn't been taken with John Zorn & his related projects such as Naked City, Painkiller, & Masada... Edited by Captain Capricorn - July 20 2009 at 17:29 |

I suppose Laswell's 2006 release Episome with Japanese giants Otomo Yoshihide of Ground Zero & Tatsuya Yoshida of Ruins would be a good starting place.

Right, so I would still like Laswell's most representative solo avant-prog output. That is what is required for evaluation. Bands he was in need to be eval'd on a case by case basis.

No artist on this site has every album they played on listed in their discography. If added, Laswell would be no different. All the laswell albums would be on (duh), and I guess the different joint ventures that feature his name would be considered one by one.
Seperate band names in which Laswell was a member should not be added under his name. Edited by Easy Money - June 23 2009 at 14:19 |

Well, I know Henry Plainview has been pushing for Last Exit to be included. Problem is these seem to be separate bands that would have to be evaluated by themselves (e.g. Massacre already in the archives); how does one separate Laswell "solo" from these collaborative works? |

Hallucination Engine is a great record, so is Speak No Evil, both are very somber, almost religious in a way. |

Material too ...have you heard Hallucination Engine? ...it's a fusion masterpiece!
![]() If you're at all a fan of Weather Report & other world-influenced fusion acts then you'd be doing yourself an incredible disservice to miss that one!

My favorite Laswell, project, Arcana, fits best into jazz rock fusion, I think. But I leave it to the Captain to make his case, when an artist is all over the place it's rather difficult.

Praxis, Massacre, Last Exit , & Painkiller are, IMO, Laswell's most avant projects.
I included several links to Praxis' music in the Praxis suggestion thread I started a while back.
Massacre, Laswell's project with Henry Cow's Fred Frith, is already included in the archives.
Last Exit & Painkiller, OTOH, can be heard at last.fm.

Please provide what you think is the best example of Laswell's work that would fit avant-prog. I'll repost it in the team thread and we can re-visit. Laswell has been brought up before and has been somewhat of a question mark.

Laswell's solo work is all over the place where genre is concerned, but I particularly love the jazziness of Invisible Design.
He is mailny known for his work with Material (e.g. Hallucination Engine), Praxis (e.g. Transmutation), & Tabla Beat Science (e.g. Tala Matrix).
