Thanks to everybody who wrote in wrt last week's 1969 Special. Back to another sort of normality tonight, although I've been digging deeper into the archives for obscurities ignored for too long. This includes sampling some of the Wire magazine's 100 alternative essential albums you should be listening to (apparently), including X103, Comus, Ram John Holder, the Walker Brothers (interestingly) and Kip Hanrahan. In the meanwhile I've selected Antique Seeking Nun, Dan Hartman. A couple from the later Kevin Ayers, who I discovered didn't drop out of the music industry after leaving the Soft Machine, was because Jimi Hendrix gave him a guitar and told him to write more interesting songs. There's several recent releases sent me and plenty more.

Another special.... Too often I hear pundits telling me that a specific year has been special for certain types of music. To me 1969 is special wrt transitions in rock, with forms of heavy rock, progressive rock, jazz rock and folk rock becoming crystallised in the hands and with the voices of musicians, many of whom remain popular in 2024. To be honest 120 minutes or so is not long enough to include many ... although I have probably played those bands in the recent past and in the near future. So please enjoy those tunes I've brought to the show tonight.

Hello Again,
Tonight's ALT2 Show has another mix of old and new. Jazz fusion from Miles Davis (a request), Scott Henderson, Heliocentrics, The Fire Merchants, Stanley Clarke/Jeff Beck and Fela Kuti. New and recent prog: The Pineapple Thief, Malcolm Galloway, Isildurs Banes/Jinian Wilde, Magnum, Moron Police. From half a century or so ago: Moby Grape, Skip Spence, Spencer Davis Group, Nicky Hopkins, Phil Ochs, Mike Bloomfield and the obscure Yesterday's Children. And there's music from more recent times.
Next week, all music released in 1969 when (IMHO) popular music took sort of quantum change.

We have a recent Grammy winner on this Taylor Swift-free show - which begs the question, how many categories do they award Grammies for? New recordings from: Dr Feelgood, Jharis Yokley, Ches Smith, Plantoid, Gary Lucas, Isildurs Bane & Jinian Wilde, UFO (celebrating their 50th anniversary). Folk from Fairport Convention (who coincidentally happen to be playing at Loughborough Town Hall this week), and The Magpie Arc. Joe Walsh following a suggestion by our station manager. Dutch southern rock?! Other sorts of blues from Les Butler & The Red Devils, Ali Farka Toure. There's electronica and the inevitable jazz.

New and future releases sampled: supergroup PAKT, Gary Lucas & Yass Body, Kevin Burt, Kimara Sajn, Chris O'Leary, Mark Trecka, and last but not least Isuldurs Bane with Jinian Wilde.... not forgetting Alan Benjamin of Advent solo release. The precursor song that evolved into Soft Machine's 'Moon In June' and then that great independent record label Moonjune Records. Archive scoured for Cliff Bennett & The Rebelrousers, Martha & The Muffins, early Dr Feelgood, the Everly Brothers (backed by member of the Hollies & Led Zeppelin, now there's a combination), and the Everly Pregnant Brothers????? And much more....

Hello February already!! Tonight another indulgence into popular music augmented with brass or other wind instruments, with a very brief guide to roots and then some of the popular bands and the obscure. Listing the obscure: Californian Transit Authority (Chicago meets Tower Of Power), the one off of UK's Satisfaction, Rock Workshop (a start point for Ray Russell and Alex Harvey), another Austrian guitar whizz Conrad Schrenk, 64 Spoons, Chase, Rastus and Nojazz. You should have heard of Dreams and Ides Of March. Be with me from 9pm GMT.
Next week: new releases from Alan Benjamin, Kimara Sajn, Isildurs Bane & Jinian Wilde, Gary Lucas. Plus fun: a familiar tune sung in a particular Yorkshire accent, by gum.

Back to the usual mix of old and new this week. Reminder of the late Tony Oxley drumming on the first album by British jazzers I ever bought, McLaughlin's 'Extrapolation'. Other jazz related: Electrocution 250 (fusion at 100mph), two recently disinterred obscure brass rock bands, Guillotone and Kush, Jan Bang, plus taster tracks off Kim Sajn +1's forthcoming album 'Wayfinding'. Reissues of sorts: The Faces, Guru Guru, 13th Floor Elevators, Mr Big. Avant rock: Officer!, Danile Ogren, and I might include Buckethead here as well. Plus much more. Next week: music with brass backing.
Come Easter we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the ALT2 Show on LCR, and only a few tee shirts could made using the artwork conjured up by Andy Marlow over a decade ago. Can't remember what sparked off the over-riding topic of this Thursday's ALT2 Show, but it has been fun reminding myself of the people who have provided voice overs for the jingles used here. And where have the music samples used in the jingles been sampled from?
So huge thanks goes to Gary Lucas, Joe Zawinul, Dennis Rawlings, Gary Husband, John Erickson, Tony Palkovic, The Bent Knee, Scott McGill, David Cross, David Fuze Fiuczynski, John Novello, Kate Wakefield of Lung, Kim Sajn of Polyethylene PET +1, and Mange Anderson of Brickhouse & Grand Electric, for the programme IDs.
So you'll hear many of the voices of these great musicians as well the full versions of many tunes, of which a few bars were taken for the jingles. Finally many many thanks go to those people who have sent me promos, that give the ALT2 Show a particular character over the last 40 years. Happy Christmas Everybody
13th Alt 2 Show since October, this one has a few Christmassy treats. An archival album discovery of a former Loughborough student and folk singer Dave Evans, other folk coming from the most modern Ninebarrow. Heart throb of the 90's Rick Astley tackles Yes; then something from Peter Hammill and a long, relaxing tune by Sweden's Anekdoten. Spot the link between Megadeth and Umphrey's McGee. Weird rock (but most of it is) specifically by Jobs, Morricone and Graveyard. Panzerpallett provides their form of jazz, plus the UK's Rob Luft in another part of the jazz spectrum. Early Paul Buttterfield. And the most versatile Joe Jackson treats you to music hall fun circa 1910. And much more. Enjoy. Back probably 2nd week in January 2024. Starting in less than 90 min time, the penultimate ALT2 Show before our Christmas break. As ever old and new including a few long ones tonight. Featuring a couple of tunes each: maestro Gary Lucas, Harriett Olsen (of Hellsong) and the neglected Kevin Gilbert. Mr and Mrs Fripp tease a Frankie Goes To Hollywood tune. What ever happen to Polphonic Spree, well they are back after a long time? Other newies from Peter Gabriel, Ghost Train Orchestra/Kronos Quartet (play Moondog... are you old enough to remember Moondog on the Rock Machine sampler?), Nils Petter Molvaer. Reissues from Airto & Flora, Camel, Art Of Noise, Steeley Dan. And then more.

Seemed to, but not deliberately, picked more from the archives than new releases. However, let's start with the new: much praised young British guitarist Rob Luft, Madness with a concept album of sorts, avant rock from Ghost Marrow, folk by Flynn and McPharland, a first for the show the blues both from Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Foghat, finally the Norwegian folk influenced Sinnika Langeland. Reissues with many extras tracks for Christmas: Zappa, Brian Auger's Obivion Express, Hawkwind, The Kinks, Thin Lizzy - useful to have the originals without needing to take out mortgage for the reissues. As promised a few weeks ago Bruce Hornsby with DeJohnette and McBribe. The inevitable picks from the psychedelic west coast....

Christmas is coming and an avalache drops of remastered albums with extra tracks in boxes. Avoiding many although next week's show might take a hammering. The relatively new from: Sherinian Phillips band, Coluratura, Robin Trower, King Gizzard etal (with their 5th album in 2 years). A fresh take on some It Bites classics recorded earlier this year, fronted once more by Frankie Dunnery (and a little bird says the blu ray edition is running out). And then there is the AI remixed Beatles collection... well one tune tonight. A variety of folk: Al Stewart, Tim Buckley, Stick In The Wheel. The heavy stuff from Hellborg and Co's Shining Path, Tool (doing a Fibbonacci inspired arrangement). Funk ranging from Eddie Harris to Jan Hammer. And more, less than 2 hours away. Nearly forgot to post this but better now 2hours before the show starts, than after. Time to remind you of Niacin and the earlier jazz fusion of Mahavishnu Orchestra and the Jan Hammer Group. Longish tunes by Al Stewart and Ukrainean Victor Go. Blues from Grammy winning Christone Kingfisher Ingram, Robin Trower and Captain Beefheart's individual version of that genre. Local band The Surfing Magazines (with a song naming villages near Loughborough). Apart from Beefheart, other weirdness by Laibach, and the Stranglers in Swedish. A special indirectly influenced comments by our new station manager on hearing Nazz a couple of weeks ago. Not that all music here is directly linked to the Fab Four, there are tracks that have their roots in other music from the second half of the 60's. And those Beatles tunes played are by other composers. Enjoy.

Remembering Carla Bley, jazz composer, pianist, bandleader. Early American prog from Touch, newer prog by Unifaun (heavily in Genesis mode), Steven Wilson. Nick Mason as jazz drummer, other jazzy music from Michael Peter Olsen, Al Kooper/Randy Brecker, Schaerer/Kalima, Rascal Reporters (with added Kim Sajn), Julio Resende. Rock: Paul Rodgers, Black Stone Cherry, Umphrey's McGee, Thumpermonkey (from their free-to-download album), Rolling Stones. Folk: Fleet Foxes, Bob Dylan, Gren Bartley. Much more including blues, to happily fill out the 2 hours.
Next week the Almost Beatlesque Special.

Continue with the reminder that there is more than Ezra Collective putting out new jazz: Donny McCaslin, Shakti, Sons of Kemet, plus Soft Machine (also as a reminder of the recent death of their long time drummer John Marshall). Folk from Kathryn Tickell (representing the North of England) and Bird In The Belly (the South), plus Stackridge. Old and new psychedelia: Tomorrow and The KVB. Bluesy stuff from the British old school: Robin Trower, Eric Clapton. New French music from the markedly different: Sadam Webcast and O'O. The inevitable progressive rock from Hats Off Gentlemen Its Adequate, U.K.. And there's much more, hopefully to please all sorts of musical tastes, metal, avant, electronica, even The Grateful Dead reggaefied.........
And for those who listen outside the UK, our clocks go back one hour this coming weekend to GMT. I think I'm correct saying N American clocks go back the first weekend in November. Ttherefore ALT2 Show for 2nd November will be at 4pm on the East Coast and 1pm on the West Coast of America, for one week only? Apologies for the late posting: been a good week for needles (medical) being jabbed into me. Thanks from two professional musicians liking the 'eclectic' mix of last week's show... hopefully more the same tonight. To remind that there is much more than Mercury Prize winners Ezra Collective playing innovative jazz-based music, I give you the Snarky Puppy, Zoophyte, GoGo Penguin and John Zorn. Several tunes from one of the NY Time's 100 Essential (no doubt eclectic) Guitarists, Gary Lucas. Welsh language folk.... not featured for a decade of two here, (anybody remember 'Barafundel'). Progressive music : Gentle Giant, Bent Knee, District 97, Riverside. 70's band, Firefall are back with a covers album. Excerpt of a Terry Riley composition. And The Cardiacs: after the death of leader Tim Smith the band's record label have reissued the band's first album, bundled with three extra discs of music: HURRAY. Then there a few unknowns.
Next week, something from the third of her collection: 'Joni Mitchell's Archive. Volume 3'. Plus a band just reissued, Unifaun, claiming to play the music Genesis could have wrote and performed...in parts I can just about believe them. At Scott's request bluesman Chad Rupp. And sneak listen to what Mr Waters has done to 'Dark Side' .
