^Indeed!
Spector make easily some of the best bass guitars right now, no question. Exceptional quality with the Czech and US made models for sure. Basically, if you're looking for something that will give you great tone , versatility and has extremely easy playability, Spector is a name to look to. |

Absolutely amazing basses! I'd definitely say to stick with the Czech models and US models. A ton of low end and growl. One of the few mass produced basses I'd love owning.

Like Phileas said, I'd recommend searching used gear. Since my first bass, I have yet to buy a single brand new bass. I really don't plan on buying a new bass any time in the future unless it's a custom shop bass made specifically for me.

Schecter basses are really good value for money. Warwick's Rockbass series are good, but I'd rather save up for a proper Warwick instead. Ibanez make some very nice instruments at good prices, you should be able to find a really nice Ibanez if your budget is at $700.
Also look at used instruments. You can get great deals on great gear, especially if you buy directly from the seller or through smaller, independent stores. The problem with both Schecter and Ibanezes, Schecters in particular, is that they feel soulless and boring. But I guess that's just a personal thing. At their price, Schecters in particular are really good instruments. |

What the hell is wrong with Schecter? Any Schecter is going to be better value for money than any EBMM guitar/bass, and Schecter instruments have a reputation for being able to crap all over stuff 2-4 times the price. Any anyway, the John Myung Model isn't even a production line instrument, check the website first you nong |

You can't honestly like the look of that?
Now that's pretty! Headstock's a bit dull though...

All the Warwick basses I've tried are near-perfectly balanced - but then I've been looking at the mid range basses, like the Streamer $$.
The ONLY problem with the $$ is that you only get various flavours of earthquake out of it - it's an incredibly loud and bottom heavy bass, in terms of sound, but the instrument is very well balanced indeed, physically, and Id be surprised if that didn't apply to everything put out under the Warwick name.
Warwicks (at least, the non Rockbass models) are hand made, like Sandbergs.
The mention of Ibanez got me thinking - there are some amazing second-hand MIJ basses to be had; I think Aria made a 5-string, and there was definitely a Westone Spectrum 5-string.
Those old Matsumoku guitars are top quality (I own 3), and some of the top-end models compare very favourably with (expensive) modern guitars. Shouldn't be too hard to find one of these for $500 or less (e.g. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7314202164) - and worth every penny in my book. My Thunder 1A bass cost me £129 (approx $260), and I prefer it to my Fender.

My friend has an Ibanez BTB, I've played it, it's great
Of course, I am a guitarist, and don't know everything about bass, but it does play nice.

^That's generally the case with a lot of signature gear, yes.
Well my recommendation? Save up a little bit more, and get an Ibanez BTB bass. You might be able to get a discontinued '07 MIK model now, which could easily be around for 700-800 USD. 20 Inch fingerboard radius makes for seriously good playability, there is not a Fender Bass that can even come class to the BTBs playability. They also sound awesome and have a 3 band active EQ circuit, with a highly versatile adjustable mid range control. |

That's probably true of all signature model guitars and basses. It still looks extremely cool though. |

For your dollar (or whatever currency), the Geddy Lee Jazz Bass is unfortunately not the best value for money, so I have to go against recommending it. |
