The first sides of the first two Heart albums are masterpieces of post-Led Zeppelin progressive hard rock and folk/rock, packed with brilliant songs like "Magic Man", "Soul Of The Sea", "Barracuda" and "Love Alive". Strangely, the second side of each album is very much weaker and not very progressive, although "Little Queen" ends with the outstanding suite "Cry To Me"/"Go On Cry". Their third album proper "Dog And Butterfly" is less progressive, but does contain the superb "Mistral Wind". I can't see any of their later albums being of much interest to prog fans, although they all contain at least something of excellence.

I've seen that video before, it's just incredible. I'd have to say that Nancy Wilson is possibly amongst the best rock guitarists, and sadly very underrated.

Me.
Dreamboat Annie is a fantastic album. I'm not sure if it fits into the seemingly billions of prog sub genres everyone delights in inventing, but it sure sounds good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcAn3z7D1Pc Crazy On You live on youtube. Edited by plodder - July 27 2007 at 17:58 |

I recently saw very early footage of Heart on some German show in the 70's, and I was shocked at:
1.) How proggy it was 2.) How good it was! Nancy Wilson was fingerpicking some of the most beautiful acoustic work, and there were extended instrumental parts, most very intricate, all very melodic and impressive. Going back though their older stuff, I found a song called "Soul of the Sea" that could easily make it into my top 20 fave prog songs, and "Mistral Wind" is no slouch, a sort of mini-epic... Anybody else revel in the progginess of Ann and Nancy Wilson? |
