NATIONAL HEALTH are definitely the best BAND. Their two studio albums are unmatched in their variety, good humour and musical sophistication. Purely and simply prog at its most colourful!
Of course all this doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the Softs, the Hatfields, Gong or Caravan: all throroughly enjoyable bands (most of the time). Of the Canterbury solo artists, I think Kevin Ayers is the most likable, but Robert Wyatt has produced the greatest masterpieces. Oh, and, by the way:
Febus, don't you enjoy FOR GIRLS WHO GROW PLUMP IN THE NIGHT, or even LIVE AT FAIRFIELD HALLS? Edited by fuxi - June 03 2007 at 12:34 |

I voted for Robert Wyatt, rather than Soft Machine, which may sound surprising, but that's me!
Soft Machine kept more true to his Canterbury roots, whilst Soft Machine leapt headfirst into the realms of jazz rock/fusion, which as much as I love it, isn't really what Cantebury Scene music is. |

Out of these, i like the Soft Machine I have heard the most.
Caravan 2nd
Robert Wyatt was the worst for me though, I really disliked Rock Bottom (the one time i was able to sit through it)

SOFT MACHINE of course, they were the leaders and always were trying new ground album after album.
CARAVAN was only good the first 4 albums with Richard Sinclair on board; when Pip Pyle tokk contral control, it was utter s@!t
HATFIELD AND THE NORTH were brilliant, but released only 2 albums but so good
GONG is sometimes uneven.
I don't know of a bad ROBERT WYATT album; i am not talking about his political views (which i don't share) but the voice and the music are unique and always of great quality
KEVIN AYERS has not been mentioned on this list>
